In 2020, I spent the scariest $2,000 I had ever spent on a business that did not exist yet.
It was Marie Forleo's B-School. I had no idea if it would work. I just knew I had to start somewhere. 💭
I didn't expect to find another pharmacist in that program. But I did. Her name is Marina Buksov, and five years later, she is my guest on episode 5 of the show.
Marina and I have watched each other build our businesses from the ground up. But this episode isn't really about business. It's about something most pharmacists never get told in school: pharmacy and herbalism used to be the same profession. One plant, studied and used whole. It was only industrialization that split it into two paths: one that isolated a single compound and mass-produced it, and one that stayed with the whole plant.
Marina's own road back to that second path started with her health falling apart. Procedures. Surgeries. Medications. Therapies. All the conventional steps, done right, and none of it worked. So she went looking for what else was out there, and eventually trained as a clinical herbalist herself.
The part of this conversation that has stuck with me the most is something Marina calls interoception: the ability to actually feel what is happening in your own body. So many of us have lost that. It's part of why herbs can seem like they "don't work" as well as a prescription. If you can't perceive the effect, it's easy to miss it entirely.
Her advice for getting it back was refreshingly simple. 🌱 Breathe with intention. Stay open before you dismiss something you don't understand yet. Go outside, on purpose, regularly.
No certification required. Just a starting point.
