NCPA’s Annual Convention is one we look forward to every year because we always leave reminded of the strength of this industry and why the work ahead matters.

We loved seeing so many of our AAPA members and industry partners over the last few days.

Now, our focus turns to the RFI; Medicare Part D Reasonable and Relevant Pharmacy Contracting Standards. NCPA has been working behind the scenes to help ensure we get this right, and now it’s important that independent pharmacy’s voice is heard.

❤️ September 29 is World Heart Day.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide, and most of the risk factors behind it are the everyday things your patients can actually change. That is where community pharmacists come in. You are the most accessible health professional your patients have, and often the one they see the most.

This World Heart Day, here are a few ways independent pharmacies can help their customers get ahead of heart disease:

🩺 Offer blood pressure checks and help patients understand what the numbers mean
💊 Review medications and talk through adherence, since heart medications only work when they are taken consistently
🥗 Start simple conversations about diet, movement, and other daily habits that lower risk over time
🚭 Help patients quit smoking, one of the single most powerful things they can do for their heart

💊 Friday, September 25 is World Pharmacists Day.

"Empowering pharmacists for healthier futures" is a fitting theme for 2026. It highlights the essential role pharmacists play in improving health outcomes across communities and health systems, and it makes a point worth sitting with: pharmacists do their best work when they are set up to succeed.

For independent pharmacists, that hits close to home. You are often the most accessible health professional your patients have, the one who catches the drug interaction, answers the question no one else had time for, and knows patients by name. That kind of care is not a given. It takes the right support, the right resources, and partners who understand what independents are up against.

World Pharmacy Week runs September 19 through 25, so there is a full week to recognize not just pharmacists but the whole team behind the counter: the technicians, the students, and the staff who keep your community healthy every single day.

This one's worth a listen for every independent pharmacy owner. 🎧

Todd Eury sits down with Sammy Salem, Principal Owner and COO of Vios Health and an Executive Board Member of AAPA Rx, along with Shelley Bailey of Independent Pharmacy Cooperative.

They make the case that manufacturer-direct care does not have to cut out community pharmacy. Too many independents have watched patients disappear into online and mail-order channels. The programs he and Shelley walk through are built to reverse that, keeping the participating independent pharmacy as the dispensing location while patients still get manufacturer-supported pricing.
