SIU Decatur would like to congratulate Dr. Ethan Berg and Dr. Nicole Tenegra as they both have won SIU Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Excellence Awards. These awards were awards given at Grand Rounds yesterday.

Dr. Ethan Berg DO, residency program and medical director, won the 2026 Exemplary Educator Award for excellence in education through activities and accomplishments, including breadth of educational activities, innovations in curriculum development, and peer education.

Dr. Nicole Tenegra MD, curriculum director of community outreach, won the 2026 Exemplary Community Advocate Award for dedication to community health and advocacy through activities including community health care initiatives, health advocacy, partnership with community agencies or boards, and a dedication to health equity.

Huge congratulations to both of them! Thank you for contributing your time, talents, and achievements to our training program.

Walking a mile in our patients’ shoes (and riding the bus, too)! 🚌
Today, our SIU Family Medicine residents hit the streets for an SDOH simulation—using Decatur public transit to experience the real-world hustle of getting to food pantries and pharmacies!
We also hosted our Community Partners Fair right at the clinic so our team could connect with the incredible local resources supporting our patients every day. 💙🩺
Huge thanks to our local partners for helping us build a stronger, healthier Decatur! ✨

Our new interns just completed their Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) course in Springfield. Thank you to all the faculty and staff who made this experience possible! The interns are excited to apply all they learned on their upcoming OB rotations.

Our residency award winners were Dr. Travis Jameson, MD, Nephrology, for Community Preceptor of the Year, Dr. Zachary Shipp, faculty, as Faculty Teacher of the Year, and Dr. Cameron Kell, MD as Resident Teacher of the Year. Thank you all for demonstrating excellence in making our culture one of positive learning.

Today we celebrated our graduates and our program. Stories about our experiences were told. Our best goes to all our graduates in their future endeavors and to all our faculty, administrators, nurses, and office staff who keep our program running. It was also an honor to have Tanya Andricks, CEO of Decatur Memorial Hospital join us for tonight’s celebration.

This month was filled with awards and recognitions for SIU Decatur Faculty. Congratulations goes to Dr. John Bradley and Dr. Nicole Tenegra!

Dr. John Bradley, MD, former Program Director of the SIU Decatur Family Medicine Residency, was recognized at the 2026 SIU Department of Family & Community Medicine retreat for his contributions to the School of Medicine by Dr. Jerry Kruse, MD, Dean of SIU School of Medicine. Dr. Bradley received the Harbinger Award from Dr. Kruse.

Dr. Nicole Tenegra, MD, MBA was recognized at the Alliance of Women in Medicine and Science (AWIMS) 9th Annual Professional Development Conference with the 2026 AWIMS award, “in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of women in medicine and science.” She is pictured with Dr. Vidhya Prakash, MD, Chief Medical Officer of the SIU School of Medicine and Director of AWIMS.

Recently, PGY-2s Dante Betti, DO, and Mohammud Baleegh, DO, presented their research projects at the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) annual meeting in Seattle, Washington. Both projects were co-authored by SIU Family Medicine Decatur graduate Nikhil Vatti, MD, CAQSM.

A simulation day with Millikin University - School of Nursing is always a great one. With our partnership, nursing students, physician assistant students, medical students, and MD/DO Family Medicine residents participated in inpatient and outpatient scenarios in collaborative environments led by interprofessional facilitators.

Thanks to Jordyn Bailey, LCPC, Ethan Berg DO, Jonathan Dutt MD, Rami Elmasry MD, Angie Lafrenz DNP, Laura Law DMSc, Christi McDaniel DMsc, and Kelly Slade DNP for their time to help facilitate our simulation day! Thanks to Millikin University for sharing their wonderful simulation facility with us.
