The Three Fates, known in Greek mythology as the Moirai (and later in Roman myth as the Parcae), are the powerful sister-goddesses who control the metaphorical thread of life for every mortal and god from birth until death. Even Zeus is ultimately bound by their decrees. They are traditionally depicted as three old women weaving the tapestry of human destiny.

Clotho (The Spinner): She is the youngest sister who spins the thread of life from her spindle. Her actions determine the moment of a person's birth and their basic character.
Lachesis (The Allotter): She is the middle sister who measures the thread with her rod. Her role dictates the length of a person's life and assigns them their specific destiny, fortunes, and trials.
Atropos (The Unturnable): She is the eldest sister who cuts the thread of life with her infamous "abhorred shears." Her final cut determines the exact moment and manner of a person's death, and her choices are completely irreversible.

In ancient Greek art, the Fates were rarely depicted as ugly crones; instead, classical sculptures and pottery paintings usually represented them as stern, dignified women wearing crowns or veils, holding their weaving tools, or writing destinies on scrolls. According to the poet Hesiod, they are either the daughters of Nyx (Night)—representing their ancient, primordial power—or the daughters of Zeus and Themis (Justice), signaling their role in maintaining universal cosmic law

Major Arcana: Death

Despite its name, this card rarely speaks to physical death. Instead, it marks the end of a cycle. Something has run its course, and whether it feels comfortable or not, it is time to release it.

In traditional imagery, Death moves forward steadily, not with chaos, but with inevitability. This is not destruction for the sake of suffering. It is transition. It is the clearing away of what no longer belongs in your next chapter.
