Plant education - Citronella
Most citronella I experienced in the past, made me dislike Citronella. How about you? But since finding pure plant sources I have realized I enjoy the scent and my favorite way to use it is to fill my bedroom with the citronella scent at night so all the pesky mosquitos stay away and I can sleep peacefully in the summertime, but there is so much more to the citronella plant. This fragrant herb has many benefits beyond repelling insects and there is more than one type of citronella plant.
Citronella type Cymbopogon nardus, is one of several aromatic flowering grasses in the Poaceae family. Originating in tropical Asia and closely related to lemongrass, it was used historically to cleanse and deodorize surfaces.
According to Healthbenefitstimes.com Citronella also is
1)rich in the compound methyl isoeugenol which imparts powerful antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.
2) Citronella has a naturally uplifting and happy smell, with research showing that it can be both uplifting and relaxing. It appears to work on both the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, providing natural stress relief.
3)While inflammation is a valid healing response by the body, persistent low level inflammation can lead to a whole host of problems. It also contains potent antioxidant compounds that aid in the removal of free radicals, one of the major causes of persistent inflammation.
4)It can be extremely soothing when diluted with carrier oil and massaged into sore tired muscles, swollen joints and into the abdomen for menstrual cramps.
