Somatic practice in our house tonight.

My kids and I have been collectively a bit dis-regulated lately.

Transitions back to me working full time, kids back in school, and other life adjustments are taking a reasonable and expected toll on our capacity.

We are noticing less capacity to be in discomfort, capacity to be in stillness, capacity to handle frustration.

Tonight our somatic practice looks like noticing, inquiring, tracking.

Noticing and inquiring into whether the breath is nothing more than my body's response to its need for oxygen.

Letting the body dictate the rate, the rhythm, and the depth of the breath rather than imposing a rate, rhythm, or depth or symmetry on the breath from the mind,

We track each breath with a movement, with color; making a line with our hands, following that line with our eyes.

One line for each inhale.
Noticing. Inquiring. Tracking.

One line for each exhale.
Noticing. Inquiring. Tracking.

Not imposing anything new on the breath.

Just making an invitation to come into sync with the rhythm that is already there.

Integration is not in what we impose but in what we notice as it already is and then embody.

(My notepad is on the left. Myra's is on the right. We instinctively switched silently to parallel play after this because suddenly we find ourselves with capacity for stillness 😉)

The best messages!

Results make me happy.

This client had bilateral paresthesia (hands falling asleep/pins and needles) every night waking them from sleep, and very frequent headaches so we did focused work on the head and neck to invite relief.

Seeing rapid relief to chronic discomforts is so rewarding. 🎉 🥳 🙌

Summer travel seems to be irritating sciatic-type pain in lots of us.

What's the difference in true sciatica and sciatic-type pain?

True sciatica:
Occurs when the sciatic nerve or one of its spinal nerve roots is irritated or compressed.
Diagnosed by a Doctor, Chiropractor, PT

Common causes are:

Herniated disc
Spinal stenosis
Degenerative changes
Spondylolisthesis

Massage cannot fix these conditions, but it may help reduce muscle guarding and improve comfort.

Sciatic-type pain:
Pain or discomfort that follows the path of the sciatic nerve—from the low back or hip into the buttock, leg, or foot.

May feel like:
Burning
Aching
Sharp or electric
Tingling
Numbness

Sometimes symptoms that resemble sciatica come from muscles irritating or compressing nearby nerves.

Common contributors:

Piriformis
Deep hip rotators
Gluteus medius/minimus
Gluteus maximus
Hamstrings
Quadratus lumborum
Hip flexors

Massage can help when muscular tension is part of the problem.

(Persistent or severe radiating leg pain should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause. Massage therapists can assess muscular contributors and treat diagnosed conditions, but do not diagnose sciatica or other medical conditions.)

How massage therapy helps both sciatic-type pain and diagnosed sciatica:

✓ Improve mobility
✓ Reduce pain sensitivity

Soft tissue mobilization
-Gentle to moderate work to reduce tension and improve tissue mobility in muscles that may contribute to pain.

Gentle passive stretching and positional release.

The best feeling is when clients come in stooped forward barely able to walk and leave an hour later standing tall and pain-free. 😍

Hey friends,

I have not posted anything publicly about this yet because it has been an emotional process for me, but I have had to step away from massage therapy work for the rest of the year.

My physical health is not quite where it needs to be to sustain full time physically-involved work.

I am working on regaining full strength and capacity hoping and planning to be back to work in January!

*AND* Between now and then, I am working on the process to be able to take insurance!!

I know this will make a difference to my clients ability to receive treatment more frequently and make more consistent progress in your own physical and emotional health.
