I'm going to put this out here because I've had people ask, and I like to tell my story. I will try not to make this a novel.
I didn't begin my working career as an LMT. My initial goal was to become a nurse. That was deterred by having a child and needing to work as opposed to going off to college. I told myself I could always go later, but later came a long way off.
Instead, I went to work in a chiropractic office, where I stayed for 12 years. There, I learned to love anatomy and how the human body works to enable us to do all the things life requires of us. I had even discussed massage therapy with the doctors I worked for, hoping they would help me get licensed. I recognized how massage could be a great complementary therapy to chiropractic care. There were a lot of obstacles then, not the least being that there weren't any schools in the area and my boss didn't seem too interested.
Financial hardship prompted me to find a different career with benefits at the USPS in 1999, and I tolerated that job for almost 18 years. I resigned in 2016 and hoped to return to the health field. I thought working indoors sounded dreamy at the time. So, I went back to school for medical office administration. When I moved to Delaware in 2017, I went to work for a hospital's home health department as a secretary. I soon found out that office medical was very different than patient care, and I also didn't like being stuck at a desk in a windowless office. (Go figure).
2020 and COVID resolved all of that, because I was laid off and my position was eliminated pretty soon after things closed down. I stayed home and helped my youngest navigate remote learning, and decided I was not cut out for the typical office job anyway.
I still wanted to work. I just didn't want to take another job that didn't fit me, my goals, or my passion for helping people. One day, while I was on someone else's massage table, the answer just kind of came to me. After a brief discussion with my spouse, I started looking for a school, and soon after was enrolled.
Going back to school when you're 52 is an adventure. It's a gift. You appreciate learning. For me, the challenge of it was exhilarating. I met new people, made friends, and I'm very proud of what I put into and got out of that education.
What they say about pursuing your happiness is true, at least it was for me. Doing what I felt drawn to opened other doors and allowed me the work-life balance I wished I had in my prior careers.
Learning Reiki and Reflexology was the result of wanting to add more tools to become better at my craft. I'm still learning new things, still becoming, still working to be my best version of self. While I operate a business (you know, because food and electricity are expensive), what drives me is helping other people feel better in the bodies they inhabit. Life is stressful. It taxes us physically, mentally, and spiritually. I can't magically cure anything, but I can support you and your being while you heal yourself. (You can).
I could talk more about the wonderful people who helped me along the way, the magic of the human body, my own skepticism at times, or the difficulty of Ohio's MBLEX exam (shockingly difficult), but this is enough for now.
If you're still reading, I hope you find the healing benefits of positive human touch. If you're looking for a therapist, I'd love to meet you. If you're already a client, thank you. I appreciate you more than you know.
