Your pelvic floor should be working automatically and coordinating with your diaphragm for breathing and your deep core
But so many people don’t know how to coordinate these 3 components together 🤯
This can lead to pressure management issues, pelvic tension, and superficial abdominal gripping. You may notice pelvic pain, difficulty with intimacy, or trouble with peeing and pooping, as a result.
I’ve seen this issue (and seen it resolve) in people who are athletes, recovering from surgery, pregnant, postpartum, and those in chronic pain. It’s a game changer. It’s simple. It’s also not easy.
1️⃣ Start in the hands and knees position and gently press away from the ground with your hands. This causes your shoulder blades to widen and wrap around, allowing for more space in the back of the ribcage
2️⃣ Breathe into the back of your ribs for 4 seconds, envisioning that your ribcage is a balloon inflating as you inhale through your nose. Allow your belly to be relaxed and notice how it also inflates and moves toward the ground subtly. Imaging “letting go through your pelvic floor”
3️⃣ Exhale through your lips for 6 seconds and feel your ribcage and belly deflate. Toward the end of the exhale, gently engage your deep core by bringing your lower abdomen in toward your spine (gentle effort here!). You should notice that your pelvic floor subtly engages on its own - do not attempt to do a kegel.
4️⃣ Then let go everywhere and see if you can notice the pelvic floor let go as well. Repeat these steps for a minute at a time 😊
