Natura Sophia Spagyrics Traditional Alchemically Prepared Spagyric Herbal Extracts

09/02/2026

Late summer is one of our busiest and most rewarding times of year around the farm and in the spagyric lab.

The garden is bursting with herbs at peak vitality. We’re busy harvesting and processing as much as we can, capturing these plants at their freshest and most potent.

To celebrate the abundance of the season, our Harvest Sale starts today: take 20% off sitewide through Sept 9.

Because we work with fresh plants whenever possible, herbs come in from the fields and go straight to the lab for processing.

From there, each plant is taken through the spagyric process. We distill, ferment, calcine, and carefully transform the plant material through a series of traditional alchemical processes, depending on the preparation.

It’s a far more involved process than making a conventional herbal extract, and we take those extra steps because we believe the result is worth it. By working with the plant’s volatile, soluble, and mineral components, spagyrics offer a more complete expression of the plant and its properties, supporting the body, mind, and spirit.

For us, this is part of what it means to carry forward the traditional lineage of European alchemy: honoring the wisdom of the past while continuing to work with plants in the present.

And right now, all of our alchemical spagyrics are 20% off. Our Harvest Sale starts today, Sept 2, and ends Sept 9.

Have you noticed that summer feels exhausting?

Longer days, hot weather, and busier schedules can leave you worn out, restless, or overstimulated. Even when you're doing things you love, it can place extra demands on your body and nervous system.

Over time, that tension can build additional heat in the body, leaving you feeling depleted, irritable, overheated, or completely drained.

And that’s where cooling nervines like Lemon Balm come in.

As a cooling nervine, Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) can help in these times when it feels difficult to slow down.* It calms while uplifting the spirits. As a mild anxiolytic, spasmolytic and carminative, it:

✨Eases physical tension

✨Supports healthy stress regulation

✨Settles digestive upset

✨Restores a sense of calm when overwhelm turns into exhaustion*

At Natura Sophia, we prepare our Lemon Balm as a spagyric essence, honoring the full spectrum of the plant's properties through the traditional alchemical process of distillation, fermentation, and calcination.

Summer is a season of expansion: more light, more activity, more heat.

For some, that energy feels invigorating. But when seasonal heat combines with packed schedules, constant stimulation, and a nervous system already running on overdrive, it can amplify patterns of heat imbalances.

You might notice more irritability, racing or scattered thoughts, tension headaches, digestive upset, difficulty sleeping, or a sense that you simply can’t slow down.

This is where cooling herbs can be especially useful, especially those with the nervine property. These herbs are relaxing, dispel heat and unwind tension.*

🌿Comment NERVINE and we’ll send you an ebook + video that goes into way more detail🌿

In the meantime, here are 7 of our favorite cooling herbs:

1️⃣ Blue Vervain (Verbena hastata): Antispasmodic with liver and nervous system affinities, releases excess heat and muscular tension.*

2️⃣ Linden (Tilia europaea): Demulcent and diaphoretic, calms mental and emotional agitation through the heart and nervous system.*

3️⃣ Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis): An aromatic nervine that calms and uplifts while soothing irritability and stress-related digestive upset.*

4️⃣ Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): An aromatic nervine that releases mental and physical tension while supporting the nervous and digestive systems.*

5️⃣ California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica): Deeply relaxes the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, easing tension that contributes to poor sleep or occasional pain.*

6️⃣ Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora): An antispasmodic nervine that calms overstimulation and muscular tension through the nervous and musculoskeletal systems.*

Taste is a clue to how an herb acts in the body.

Before laboratory analysis and modern pharmacology, herbalists used their senses to decipher herbal properties. Taste was an important way to recognize patterns between a plant’s energetics, actions, and organ affinities.

🍋 Sour is a flavor that’s familiar to us all: the bright tang of berries, the sharp acidity of citrus and vinegar, or the tartness of fermented foods. While somewhat rare in medicinal plants, the sour flavor does show up in a handful of important remedies.

In herbs, sourness reveals the following:

🌿 Energetics: Cooling and drying. Sour herbs can cool patterns of excess heat, irritation, and inflammation, while drying and toning overly lax or “leaky” tissues.*

🌿 Actions: Antioxidant, inflammation-modulating, and sometimes tonic-astringent. Some also stimulate bile flow through a cholagogue action.*

🌿 Affinities: These herbs often act on the cardiovascular system, helping protect and tone the vasculature and capillary integrity. They benefit the mucous membranes and gallbladder.*

🌿Examples of sour herbs: Hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna), Rose (Rosa spp.), Elderberry (Sambucus cerulea), Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), and Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis)

When you learn to use taste to understand herbs, you move beyond simply memorizing what each herb is “good for” and develop the ability to assess its therapeutic benefits for yourself.

♌In medical astrology, Leo is ruled by the Sun and associated with the heart, vitality, conscious will, and the unique creativity each of us brings into the world.

At its best, Leo expresses confidence and authentic self-expression. But when this fiery energy becomes imbalanced, it can show up as an excess of heat that builds up within the system. This heat can agitate the mind and make the heart restless.

This is where Motherwort can help.

Its botanical name, Leonurus cardiaca, literally translates to "lion-hearted." Fittingly, this intensely bitter herb acts on both the cardiovascular and nervous systems. It’s a cardiotonic and nervine that calms heart-centered agitation, eases nervous tension, and cools excess heat.*

Its common name also lends clues to its properties, as Motherwort also has a very strong affinity for the female reproductive system, with applications during all phases of womanhood: from maiden to mother to crone.

Energetically, Motherwort is cooling, drying, and relaxing. It grounds fire element excess, settling the vital force when it rises into mental agitation, palpitations, overstimulation, or emotional intensity.*

Motherwort reminds out-of-balance Leo that true courage doesn’t require performing for others or wearing a mask just to impress those around you. It's about returning to the heart and expressing who you genuinely are.

If Leo season has you feeling overstimulated, closed off, or insecure, Motherwort cools, grounds, and opens the heart.

🌿Meet one of our favorite herbs for summer: Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis).

Summer naturally brings more warmth, more activity, and more stimulation. While that can feel energizing, it can also leave your nervous system running a little too hot.

In Western herbalism, Lemon Balm is considered a cooling nervine: an herb that gently helps settle excess heat and tension in the nervous system.*

Lemon Balm has an affinity for the heart and chest. It’s indicated when stress feels emotionally heavy: when you're worried, feeling irritable, holding tension in your chest, or your stomach churns when you feel overwhelmed.*

One of the things we love most about Lemon Balm is that it doesn't just calm. It also uplifts.

Its bright aroma and gentle nature help dissolve nervous tension while bringing a sense of ease and lightness. Whether enjoyed as a tea or a spagyric essence, Lemon Balm is a delicious cooling nervine.*

🌿Daily Calm or Mind Calm…which one should you choose?

As holistic herbalists, we don't simply ask, "Are you stressed?"

We ask, “How does stress uniquely show up for you?”

Do your thoughts keep looping long after your day is over? Does your stomach turn before a big event? Do your neck and shoulders seem unable to relax?

Where you feel stress can offer valuable clues about the kind of herbal support your nervous system needs.

Two of our calming spagyric formulas address similar yet distinct patterns of stress:

🌼Daily Calm is a broad-spectrum nervine formula. It’s for the person who feels wound up tight and has a range of stress-related issues.*

It combines herbs that restore the nervous system while relaxing many common stress-related issues. Chamomile (Matricaria recutitia) supports a nervous stomach, Wood Betony (Stachys officinalis) eases tension in the head and neck, Milky Oats (Avena sativa) replenishes depleted nerves, and California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) releases physical tension.*

🧠Mind Calm takes a more focused approach. Built around herbs like Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), and Gotu Kola (Centella asiactica), it's formulated to support a healthy response to stress, settle an overactive mind, and cultivate greater mental clarity.*

Both formulas support the nervous system, but they do so in different ways.

If you're looking for broad, everyday care, Daily Calm was designed for you. If your biggest challenge is mental overwhelm or racing thoughts, Mind Calm offers more targeted support.*

Both formulas are part of our Summer Collection Sale, now 10% off for a limited time.
