Signed into law: SB 125 is now a reality for Colorado students with disabilities.

This KOAA 5 story highlights how the new law strengthens protections for students who are denied accommodations at school and creates a formal complaint process for families.

For students with disabilities, access means more than being physically present in a classroom. It means being able to learn, communicate, participate in activities, and receive the support needed to be included throughout the school day.

🎉 Governor Polis has signed SB 26-125 into law.

The new law provides additional protections for students with disabilities as federal enforcement continues to weaken. The bill passed with bipartisan support and creates a clearer process for families when students are denied accommodations or equal access to education.

This is an important victory for students with disabilities across Colorado and for the families and advocates who fought to make sure their rights are protected at the state level.

Many thanks to 9news for shining a spotlight on this bipartisan legislation!

A Colorado mom says her 10-year-old daughter has been left out at school. A new bill could change that.

One out of every six children in Colorado has a disability. Will we protect their rights?

That’s up to the Governor.

Senate Bill 26-125 would ban discrimination in Colorado’s schools. The bill passed the legislature with bipartisan support and now awaits Gov. Polis’s signature.

Last year, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights received a record 24,000 complaints. The office resolved fewer than 1%.

Under SB 125, students with disabilities must be allowed to participate fully in school — not just sit in the classroom, but actually learn, communicate, travel, join activities, and be treated with equal dignity and opportunity. A school could not deny a deaf student an interpreter, exclude a child from a field trip because they use a wheelchair, or unnecessarily isolate students with disabilities from their peers.

The bill creates a formal complaint process, requires school districts to investigate and correct problems, and permits the state to step in — even withholding funding in serious cases — if schools repeatedly violate disability rights. SB 125 also prohibits retaliation against families who file complaints.

We are calling on the Governor to protect the rights of these students and sign this bill into law today. They've waited long enough.
