Yoga teachers - we can’t assume focusing on the breath is calming and grounding for everyone (even if it’s one of our most beloved nervous system tools).

So what do we do?? Offer choice!

Instead of: take a deep breath” or “focus on your breath”

Try instead: “if it feels okay to focus on your breath today; explore taking a deeper breath” “option to focus on your breath for a few moments”

Also - please remind your students of their agency at the beginning of EVERY class with something like “my cues are only suggestions; please take what resonates and leave the rest behind”

What trauma-informed yoga actually is… (it’s probably not what you think) 🧠🤍

Most people assume trauma-informed yoga means you have to teach “gentle yoga”. But that’s actually not it at all. You can teach any style of yoga and incorporate trauma-informed principles.

It’s about:
→ Restoring choice — invitational language, encouraging you to make choices that are best for you in any given moment
→ Building agency — developing a relationship with your body, not overriding it
→ Cultivating relationship — the way a teacher hold space matters
→ Creating conditions for safety — not guaranteeing it, but reducing barriers to it

And here’s what it’s NOT: it’s not a style. It’s an approach that can live inside any yoga class you’re already teaching.

As a licensed trauma therapist AND yoga teacher, I believe this lens is essential for anyone working with bodies — full stop.

Abuse survivors, I see you. This is so hard on our already bruised hearts and nervous systems.

If (and only if) you are ready to take some action, I’ve posted some ways in my stories to help.

Well this is vulnerable… however I realize that it’s so important to highlight lived experience as a trauma therapist/teacher.

I get it, I understand what it means to live in survival. To feel like you can’t be present in the one life that’s happening right now.

Bc that’s what trauma does, it strips away your ability to be present.

Fortunately, trauma-informed yoga and the right type of therapy can help undo years of trauma and suffering by creating capacity to be in the body and with the present moment. It’s not a quick fix but a slow & steady process of slowly returning to yourself.

Ways to work with me in 2026:
🌿 25 hour trauma-informed yoga certification training starts Feb 4th, live & online
🌿 I have a few spots open for somatic psychotherapy + EMDR sessions for Colorado residents (in person or virtual)

If you work with bodies, you’re already working with trauma—whether you realize it or not. And let’s be honest: we are living in an unprecedented time of stress, grief, and nervous system overload.

Trauma and nervous system dysregulation don’t only show up in therapy rooms.
They show up in yoga classes, wellness sessions, breathwork, and movement spaces every single day.

This free Intro to Trauma-Informed Yoga masterclass is for practitioners who want to:
• Feel more confident working with diverse nervous systems
• Understand how trauma affects the body, so you can better support the bodies in front of you
• Learn practical, trauma-aware language and foundational principles for holding safer space

You don’t need to process trauma to teach responsibly—but you do need to understand how it lives in the body.

👉 Register for the free masterclass and strengthen your foundation as a trauma-aware practitioner.

Can’t attend live? No problem. A recording will be sent to all registered participants.

We’re living through collective stress and pretending otherwise doesn’t make us stronger.

What’s working now is co-regulation, community, and practices that honor survival… not override it.

If you’ve been feeling like your tools aren’t landing the way they used to, you’re not alone. The times have changed, and our work has to change with them.

✔️ Click the link in my bio to download the free Trauma-Informed Yoga Essentials Guide — a resource for practitioners who want to show up differently.
✔️ Enrollment is open for the 2026 cohort for the Trauma-Informed Yoga Certification, designed for yoga teachers, therapists, social workers & space-holders ready for a new kind of teaching and care.

Both are here to support you, not overwhelm you.
Come be part of the future of this work. Everything is linked in my bio. 💫
