How to choose a compounding pharmacy:
Selecting a compounding pharmacy can be difficult so this is a primer on the questions (and answers) you should ask to determine which pharmacy is right for you.
1) How does the pharmacy determine the expiration dates for their compounds? Best Answer: Pharmacies should use the shorter of the expiration date for the formula they used and the US Pharmacopeia default expiration date. Some examples of USP expiration dates are: 14 days for water-based suspensions, 1 month for oil-based suspensions, 6 months for capsules.
2) Where does your pharmacy get it's chemicals for compounging? Best Answer: The pharmacy sources it's chemical exclusively from FDA-approved compounding wholesalers (such as Letco, Medisca, Fagron, etc). Use caution when working with a pharmacy that sources it's own chemicals because they may not undergo the same testing and scrutiny that the FDA-approved compounding wholesalers require.
3) Who does the actual compounding? Best Answer: A trained compounding technician or pharmacist.
4) Who verifies the accuracy of the compounded products? Best Answer: The pharmacist trained in compounding. Only a pharmacist can verify the accuracy and quality of a compounded medication.
5) How do you test the quality and accuracy of your compounds? Best Answer: Random weight testing or sending it to an outside testing facility to verify the medication.

If your compounding pharmacy can answer these questions and provide the correct answers, they have cleared the first hurdle for selecting a quality compounding pharmacy.

ThrivingPets just added an exciting new product- CheckUp for Cats. CheckUp provides a quick, simple, and reliable testing method to observe the general wellness of your companion
animal through at home urine testing. Each testing parameter is carefully selected to provide pet owners with a window into their animal's general health, revealing common diseases. CheckUp is ideal for those who want to monitor their cat or dog's health in-between visits to the clinic, or, for those who require regular monitoring through urine collection, as recommended by a doctor.
