Turns outā€¦scissors really can kill people āœ‚ļø

Okay, not in a ā€œwatch out for the pointy endā€ kind of way. But during cardiac arrest, every second spent fumbling through layers trying to cut clothes off is a second without a lifesaving shock. And thatā€™s the part that matters.

If scissors are nearby, great! Use them!

But if they arenā€™t, donā€™t waste valuable time trying to create the ā€œperfectā€ setup

In many cases, itā€™s faster to lift the shirt and place the pads immediately. Because in cardiac arrest, speed matters more than people realize.

The faster a shock is delivered, the better the chance of survivalāš”

Most people first hear the word ā€œtroponinā€ after they, or someone they love, ends up in the ER šŸ„

And when a doctor says, ā€œYour troponin is elevated,ā€ it can sound terrifying.

So what is troponin?

Troponin is a protein found inside heart muscle cells. When the heart is injured, stressed, inflamed, or not getting enough oxygen, troponin can leak into the bloodstream. ā¤ļø

Thatā€™s why doctors often check troponin when someone has:

ā€¢ Chest pain
ā€¢ Shortness of breath
ā€¢ Fainting
ā€¢ An abnormal EKG
ā€¢ Symptoms concerning for a heart attack

But hereā€™s the important part:

An elevated troponin does NOT always mean heart attack.

It simply tells doctors: ā€œSomething may be stressing the heart.ā€

Troponin can also rise from:

ā€¢ Severe infection
ā€¢ Heart failure
ā€¢ Kidney disease
ā€¢ Blood clots in the lungs
ā€¢ Very fast heart rhythms
ā€¢ Broken heart syndrome, also called Takotsubo cardiomyopathyšŸ’” (And yes, broken heart syndrome is real)

Troponin is not a panic number. Itā€™s a clue!šŸ©ŗ

Doctors use it alongside symptoms, EKGs, medical history, and other testing to figure out whatā€™s really going on.

A few weeks ago, our team came across a post from Prospex sharing that their public access defibrillator had gone missing after previously being used multiple times within the local community.

The story immediately caught our attentionā—

After seeing the post, Paige reached out to begin conversations around how HeartHero could help support getting public access to emergency equipment restored for the community.

Access to AEDs matters, especially in spaces where people rely on them being there when every second countsā±ļø

Working alongside Richard Frankland, James Russell helped coordinate getting a new AED back in place and operational for public access use.

As Prospex shared:

ā€œWe know from experience how important the defibrillator is to our local community. After it went missing, HeartHero were quick to step in with a brand-new AED, with all the support needed to get it up and running.
