Exciting new research findings from CSU Equine Sciences about equine welfare in EAS!

New research from Colorado State University is taking a closer look at the welfare of horses working in equine-assisted services (EAS).

Published in Animals, CSU researchers Jéssica Carvalho Seabra, Tanja Hess, Tessa Finnestead, and Temple Grandin evaluated EAS horses using a comprehensive approach that included behavioral observations, blood-based physiological measures, health status, and 24-hour time budgets.

One of the most encouraging findings: horses showed no difference in the frequency of pain- and stress-related behaviors when ridden by individuals with physical impairments compared with able-bodied riders.

Conducted at CSU’s Temple Grandin Equine Center, this work emphasizes the importance of evaluating the whole horse - behavior, health, management, environment, and rest - to support the horses that make equine-assisted services possible.

Congratulations to the CSU research team on this important contribution to equine welfare science!

The PATH Intl. Equine Welfare Committee is recruiting professionals in equine-assisted services who are in a leadership role at a PATH Intl. Center to participate in a survey entitled, “A survey of equine-related training across centers providing equine-assisted services” (Purdue IRB Protocol #2026-00000891).
If you are 18 years of age or older, and are in a leadership role at a PATH Intl. Center, you are eligible to complete the online research survey linked below. The survey should take approximately 15-30 minutes and will ask you about your center’s training and education procedures on horse behavior, safe handling practices, and general safety around horses in equine-assisted services. All surveys are anonymous to protect confidentiality. If you have any questions regarding the study, please email Dr. Leanne Nieforth at [email protected].
