The Center for African American Health (CAA Health) is a community rooted organization providing health education and health promotion programs to African Americans. From its community hub in Denver, CO CAA Health partners with a wide variety of health-education and health-delivery organizations to develop and provide culturally appropriate disease prevention and disease management programs to tho

usands of African Americans each year. We offer programs on diabetes, cardiovascular disease, prostate cancer, wellness program for seniors, behavioral health and health literacy training. CAA Health also acts as the voice for African Americans in the public policy arena, advocating for system reforms that improve access to health care, quality of care and access to preventive services. We also want to hear from the community. Through our BeHeard Mile Hi and BeHeard Colorado initiatives, we seek to identify any gaps in supports for children and youth that CAA Health is uniquely poised to address. CAA Health is happy to partner with Montbello Walks and host community food box giveaways every Monday throughout June!

Food insecurity remains a persistent challenge across the metro-Denver region. Recent data indicates that 1 in 10 households in the Denver metro area experiences food insecurity, with disproportionately higher rates among Black families. Nationally, Black households face food insecurity at nearly twice the rate of white households, a disparity driven by longstanding structural inequities in income, access, and opportunity.

Events like this are not just about food distribution—they are about dignity, access, and community care.

We extend our deep gratitude to Montbello Walks for their partnership, leadership, and shared commitment to advancing health and wellness in historically underserved communities. Their presence and collaboration continue to make meaningful, on-the-ground impact possible.

Healthy Food Boxes are available every Monday in June, from 1 pm to 4 pm.

No registration is required.

We invite community members to spread the word, volunteer, or come out in support as we continue this effort each Monday. Together, we are building healthier communities—one family at a time.

During our recent Mommy & Me Cooking class, moms and little chefs enjoyed making Greek Chicken bowls with a yogurt tzatziki sauce and a fresh salad.

The children had the joy of cutting carrots, dill, onions, lettuce, and shaving cucumbers! Most of the veggies didn’t even make it into the salad because they were eaten immediately after cutting!

The kiddos even decided to make their own cucumber-lemon water with leftover ingredients!

Mental health challenges continue to impact individuals and families across the metro-Denver community, yet access to care remains a major barrier. Cost, lack of insurance, and limited availability of culturally responsive providers often prevent people from seeking the support they need.

In Colorado, thousands of individuals go without mental health services each year, with disparities disproportionately affecting Black communities due to longstanding systemic inequities. Without access to affordable and trusted care, many are left to navigate challenges alone—delaying support and worsening outcomes.

The Center for African American Health is addressing this gap through its Behavioral Health Assistance Program, which connects community members to therapy services. This program removes financial barriers while prioritizing access to culturally responsive care that meets individuals where they are.

Through this initiative, participants are matched with licensed therapists and supported in navigating the process of getting connected to care. By simplifying access and centering community needs, CAA Health is helping individuals take the first step toward healing and long-term wellness.

Taking the first step toward mental wellness should not come with barriers. To learn more and to get connected to therapy services, please contact [email protected]

Share this resource with someone who may benefit or partner with us to expand access. Together, we can ensure that mental health care is accessible, equitable, and community-centered.
