Blood cancer can change a life in an instant. So can the care that follows.

This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re sharing Jack Northrup’s story. At just 30 years old, Jack was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) after what initially seemed like a stubborn sore throat quickly became something much more serious.

He came to Colorado Blood Cancer Institute, where he underwent intensive chemotherapy and ultimately a stem cell transplant under the care of Tara Gregory, MD, and Michael Maris, MD.

Today, Jack is more than 15 years cancer-free, raising two sons with his wife and making the most of the second chance he says he’ll never take for granted.

Featured in *The American Journal of Managed Care*, the conversation explored how treatment sequencing, outpatient infrastructure and collaboration with community providers can help bring innovative therapies to more patients.

A newly published study in the *International Journal of Hematology* cites research from Colorado Blood Cancer Institute examining lymphocyte expansion and atypical neurotoxicity following CAR T-cell therapy for multiple myeloma.

The recognition reinforces the important role CBCI investigators play in expanding the medical community’s understanding of innovative cellular therapies. Could treatments developed for blood cancers help reset an immune system that has turned against the body?

Our very own Richard Nash, MD, recently spoke with Ivanhoe Newswire about emerging approaches for severe autoimmune diseases, including CAR T-cell therapy and stem cell transplantation.

Rather than continually suppressing the immune system, researchers are studying whether these treatments can rebuild or replace it, potentially leading to longer-lasting responses and allowing some patients to reduce or stop other treatments.

While these approaches remain in clinical trials and are not appropriate for everyone, Dr. Nash says the early results offer reason for hope.
