What if changing your focus doesn't mean changing your direction?

Sometimes life requires more from us right now.

Giving something immediate more focus doesn't necessarily mean we've abandoned what matters longer term.

Our focus can change as circumstances change.
Our direction can remain.
And sometimes what happens along the way gives us new information that changes the direction itself.

Intentional living doesn't require following a plan without interruption.

It requires continuing to notice where you are, what's happening around you, and where you're trying to go.

When did you last look at where you're going?

Responding to what's in front of us can sometimes require most of our focus.

And sometimes that continues longer than we expected.

Days become weeks.
Weeks become months.

The things immediately in front of us keep changing, and we keep responding.

Meanwhile, the direction we once chose can quietly move out of view.

When you look beyond what's immediately in front of you, are you still headed where you want to go?

09/01/2026

What is asking for your focus right now?

Not everything that asks for our focus was part of the plan.

A responsibility.
A problem.
An opportunity.
A person who needs us.
A change we didn't expect.

Some things can wait.

Others may change what we need to focus on right now.

Noticing what's asking for our focus doesn't mean we have to respond to everything.

It helps us see what we're actually navigating.

What has been asking for more of your focus lately?

Having a direction can help us make intentional choices about where we're going.

But life doesn't stop unfolding while we're looking ahead.

Sometimes something right in front of us needs our focus.

Other times, what's immediately in front of us can consume so much of our focus that we lose sight of where we're headed.

Maybe the challenge isn't choosing one over the other.

It's continuing to see both.

Are you paying attention to where you're going and what's in front of you?

08/30/2026

Living intentionally requires having a sense of where you're going while staying aware of what's happening in front of you.

The challenge isn't to give the present and future equal attention.

Different moments and seasons may require very different amounts of each.

It's being able to see both.

Direction helps us know where we're going.

Awareness helps us navigate what's actually happening along the way.

Why This Week Matters

Last week invited us to notice how our external environment might influence what happens within us.

This week looks closer at what moves through that environment and into our everyday experience.

Some inputs are intentional.
Some are incidental.
Some immediately get our attention.
Others become part of the background.

The invitation isn't to judge what you're consuming or immediately change it.

It's to notice:

What am I taking in?

Did I choose it?

And what seems to happen within me afterward?

That awareness can give us another piece of information for understanding ourselves and making more intentional choices about how we navigate our lives.

What if consumption is about more than what you choose?

It's easy to notice the things we intentionally consume.

But much of what we experience isn't something we deliberately selected.

It's simply around us often enough to become familiar.

That doesn't mean every input has a meaningful effect.

But sometimes understanding our patterns requires noticing what has been repeatedly entering our experience before the pattern ever appeared.

08/26/2026

How does what you consume leave you feeling?

Different inputs can affect us differently.

Something might leave you energized.

Distracted.

Curious.

Connected.

Tense.

Calm.

Inspired.

Or simply wanting more.

And the same input may not affect everyone the same way.

Noticing what happens afterward can tell us something about our own relationship with what we're consuming.

What have you noticed about how different inputs affect you?

08/25/2026

How much of what you consume do you actually choose?

Some inputs are easy to recognize.

The food we eat.
The shows we watch.
The music we play.

But others simply become part of our day.

A conversation happening nearby.
Something appearing in our feed.
Background noise.
The messages repeated in the places we spend our time.

We don't have to consciously choose something for it to become part of what we're experiencing.

What inputs have become so familiar that you barely notice them?
