We’re living in a time when people are encouraged to trust intuition, follow synchronicities, listen for messages, and take mystical experiences seriously.

I think we also need to get much better at discernment.

A powerful insight can feel completely true and still deserve time, curiosity, and questioning.

Is it intuition? Fear? An old pattern? Something I want to believe? Or is something deeper asking for my attention?

Sometimes the work isn’t acting on the insight.

It’s staying with it long enough to understand what it might actually be telling you.

What does your mind say?

What does your body say?

What changes when you slow down and listen?

That’s part of what I’ll be exploring in my talk for Mystical Teachings for the Modern Soul next week.

Having a mystical experience is one thing. Learning how to relate to it wisely is another.

We take about 22,000 breaths every day. Most happen automatically, but when we bring awareness to the breath, something shifts. Our bodies soften, our nervous system settles, and we open space for insight and connection.

This course provides a foundation in breathwork and explores the history of breathwork, as well as an overview of modern science. It’s an invitation to slow down, reconnect with your breath, and discover simple techniques you can use anytime.

What Is a Relatogen?

A relatogen is a substance, practice, or experience that brings relationship into awareness and has the potential to reorganize and deepen how we relate to ourselves, our bodies, our memories, other people, nature, meaning, and the wider field of life.

I use the term relatogen to describe experiences that do more than change how we feel or perceive the world. They reveal the relationships already shaping our lives and how we relate to them.

A relatogenic experience might bring attention to our relationship with grief, fear, family, creativity, death, love, purpose, the body, the Earth, or whatever we consider meaningful or sacred. It may show us where connection has been lost, where conflict remains unresolved, or where a different way of relating is possible.

Psychedelics can be relatogens. So can breathwork, meditation, therapy, grief, ritual, time in nature, near-death experiences, and other transformative or non-ordinary states.

The defining feature is not the method itself, since many practices and tools can shift our relationships.

Over the years, I’ve had a lot of conversations about the “healing” aspects of psychedelics and non-ordinary states. People often call psychedelics “medicine,” pointing to their healing potential.

And in many of these conversations, what keeps coming forward is the relational aspect of the experience.
The community.
The connection.
The relationship to self.
The relationship to the body.
The relationship to memory, grief, fear, nature, music, meaning, spirit, and the world around us.

When I reflect on my own experiences with psychedelics, breathwork, and non-ordinary states, the relational piece has been one of the most impactful parts of my life. So it got me thinking: Is there a word that describes the relational aspect of healing that psychedelics and non-ordinary states can foster?

Relatiogen.

A relatiogen is a substance, practice, or experience that reveals, intensifies, brings forth, generates, or reorganizes relationship. In psychedelic spaces, we often ask:

How do psychedelics heal?

One answer I keep coming back to is: They change relationship. They can shift how we relate to an old story, a painful memory, a part of ourselves, a pattern, a wound, or the world around us.

The psychedelic experience may open the door, but it's the integration that is where that new relationship gets practiced.

Does relatiogen feel useful as a way to describe part of what psychedelics can do?

Psychedelics are often called “medicine.” I understand why. They can be healing, transformative, and deeply meaningful.

But I’ve been wondering if “medicine” is sometimes too narrow of a frame.

When we only focus on the substance, we can miss the larger field that shapes the experience: the person’s body, story, relationships, culture, preparation, support, and integration.

For me, the healing has often come through a change in relationship.

A change in my relationship to my past.

A change in my relationship to grief.

A change in my relationship to my body.

A change in my relationship to meaning, nature, mystery, and the larger field of life.

That’s why I’m proposing a new term:

Relatiogen.

A relatiogen is a substance, practice, or experience that reveals, generates, brings forth, intensifies, or reorganizes relationship.

Psychedelics may open the door, but the relationship carries the transformation forward.

A new randomized study found that conscious connected breathwork produced significantly stronger experiences of emotional breakthrough, psychological insight, feelings of unity, and mystical-type experiences than a body scan meditation.

Participants reported greater insight and meaningful behavioral changes in the week that followed.

Psychedelics, breathwork, meditation, and other practices are all tools that offer pathways into non-ordinary states of consciousness. While the methods differ, many appear to engage similar processes of emotional processing, meaning-making, self-reflection, and transformation.

The question isn't "Which tool is best?" Because there is a time and place for each of these practices and tools.

How do we help people access, navigate, and integrate transformative states in safe, ethical, and effective ways?

What are your thoughts? Have you had a powerful or transformative experience with breathwork that created lasting change in your life?

05/29/2026

How do we create safer containers for people to express their experiences, no matter how strange or weird they might be? There is still a lot of stigma in the transpersonal experience.

05/26/2026

When working with relationships, we often try to impose strategies and techniques. These often only work for a short period of time because they are imposed over the actual process happening beneath.
The process is stronger than our everyday minds. It is stronger than a communication tool. It is the real thing happening between two people. When we can become of aware of and work with that, we are in alignment with the true nature of the individuals involved and the spiritual force of the relationship itself.

"Process work means following the way of nature. Process is that which is already happening. Not what should be done...
If we could train ourselves to be aware of processes, we could work with natural relationship forces and avoid the tendency to short circuit life by applying technical strategies or trying programs as short-term solutions...
Process work focuses upon the the intended and unintended processes, upon what is happening and trying to happen, not upon who should be present, what should be happening, or what roles should be filled."
