Ensuring a deep latch while bottle-feeding helps reduce the amount of air-intake, which equals less gas for babies, and therefore, less discomfort. Additionally, a shallow latch creates more work for baby, which can cause fatigue and feeds to end prematurely. Eventually this may impact a baby’s oral motor development and function, potentially leading to greater feeding challenges.

Regardless of feeding method, a deep latch allows the tongue to more effectively cup the ni**le and supports a more efficient suck/swallow/breathe pattern.

Please reach out to schedule a consult if you’re having trouble with latching at breast or bottle, or are unsure of bottles to choose from that promote better feeding mechanics!

Science is a quickly evolving field, meaning that best practices rarely remain stagnant. The latest research on this subject (2026) suggests that leftover breast milk and formula may be safe for most infants (i.e. healthy, full term) to consume up to 24-hours post initial bottle feeding.

However, while this study aligns with much of what we know to be true concerning basic food science and bacterial growth, it is important to note that this study has not yet been peer reviewed, and therefore should not yet be used to guide clinical practice.

This is a situation where client autonomy and informed-decision making comes in to play!

Your baby may be ready to begin eating complimentary foods if they:

✨Are at least 6 months of age
✨Have good head control & can sit up unassisted
✨Have lost their tongue-thrust reflex
✨Are showing an interesting in what you’re eating

Although many babies are ready to begin eating solids around 6 months of age, every baby grows at their own, unique pace therefore, looking out for these signs of readiness is important.
