From my days in medical school during the heyday of evidence-based medicine to now navigating the vast sea of information on Instagram, I'm constantly reminded of the importance of discerning the quality of evidence. While individual experiences matter, they represent a single perspective. A doctor's account (including my own) may reflect interactions with many and individual interpretation of evidence, yet it's not universally evaluated and opinions may vary. Remember, there's valuable information out there, increasingly accessible. Interpretation within context is key. 📚💡

As an alumni, I received my issue of Penn Medicine Today in the mail. While browsing, I bemusedly found that the university wasted no time highlighting Penn's involvement in the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Reading the article, you would never have imagined the back story. A trailblazing female professor, a pay-cut and demotion in a time of hardship, institutional unwillingness to support novel investigation due to risks, and ultimately the greatest degree of gaslighting regarding their support along the way in the achievement of a remarkable victory.

We need to do better. Universities need to do better. It's time to support our faculty, especially women and families in times of challenge. Let's not claim victories that are not our own. Let's celebrate the tenacity that individuals show in their own journeys. While my friends are leaving PE-owned practices in droves, they are also leaving academia. It's time to support our researchers, our physicians, and our women.

After talking about the involvement of private equity in IVF last week, I want to share an article from and that caught my attention today. As we know, Kindbody has been making a name for itself as a corporation that does things differently. However, different may not be better. This article sheds some light on why that might be.

To recap, private equity firms own almost 1 in 5 American fertility clinics and complete 30% of all fertility treatments in the US. This means that they have a significant influence on the care that YOU receive. As physicians, we take an oath to do no harm and to help. However, when any of us work for a large corporation with MBAs looking to extract capital at any cost, ethical lines can be crossed (i.e. pushing patients into expensive, invasive fertility treatment, that may not always be indicated).

While I hope this article is overblown and inaccurate, it does highlight the concerns I have about private equity involvement in all of healthcare. As we continue to navigate new frontiers in fertility treatment, let's keep pushing for patient-centered care that prioritizes human well-being.

Have you had any unusual experiences with private equity-backed clinics? Share your thoughts in the comments below! 👇🏼 And as always, stay informed and stay empowered. 💪🏼
