SEPTEMBER IS SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH.

LET’S TALK. ❤️

Awareness isn’t just about wearing red or sharing a flyer.

Awareness means learning.
Awareness means listening.
Awareness means understanding.
Awareness means changing the conversation.

So today, let’s start with something simple:

WHAT DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT SICKLE CELL DISEASE?

Here are a few facts everyone should know:

🩸 Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder. Abnormal hemoglobin causes red blood cells to become rigid and sickle-shaped, which can block blood flow and lead to serious complications.

💥 Sickle cell pain is REAL. A pain crisis can happen suddenly and can range from mild to severe. Pain is the most common complication of SCD.

💧 Dehydration, illness, stress and extreme temperatures can contribute to complications or trigger pain for some people living with SCD.

❤️ A person with sickle cell may look perfectly fine and still be experiencing significant pain. You cannot always see what someone is going through.

🚨 Fever can be an emergency. For someone with SCD, a fever of 101.3°F (38.5°C) or higher requires immediate medical attention because infection can become life-threatening.

NOW WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU. 👇🏾

Warriors: What’s one thing you wish people understood about living with sickle cell?

Caregivers: What’s something you’ve learned that you wish everyone knew?

Family & Friends: What did you believe about sickle cell before you learned more?

Supporters: What’s one thing you’ve learned during Sickle Cell Awareness Month?

💬 Drop your answer in the comments.

Let’s educate one another.
Let’s break the myths.
Let’s listen to our Warriors.
Let’s make awareness personal.

Simply because, Sickle Cell Awareness Month isn’t just about talking ABOUT people with sickle cell.

It’s about listening TO them.

❤️ SICKLE CELL MATTERS.

DAY 2 OF SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH ❤️‍🩹

Let’s start with the basics but, let’s make it real.

How much do YOU really know about Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is an inherited blood disorder that affects hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body.

Those living with SCD may experience severe pain, fatigue, anemia, complications and other challenges that aren’t always visible from the outside.

And here’s something we want everyone to remember:

YOU DON’T HAVE TO LOOK SICK TO BE SICK.

A person living with sickle cell may be smiling, working, going to school, raising a family and showing up for life and still be dealing with the realities of this disease.

So this month, we at the SCDAAMI is going beyond awareness.

We’re going to EDUCATE. EMPOWER. ADVOCATE. AND GIVE HOPE.

❤️‍🩹 THE PAIN IS REAL.
❤️‍🩹 THE WARRIORS ARE REAL.
❤️‍🩹 THE NEED FOR AWARENESS IS REAL.

Now it’s YOUR turn:

What is ONE thing you wish more people understood about sickle cell?

Drop it in the comments 👇🏾

Now if you’re learning something new this month, share this post. Someone in your circle may need to hear it.
Now register and join us at the walk, 👉 www.scdaami.org
