Matt and Mike are headed to HYROX NYC as partners, and this is one of the strength moves built into their prep.

Between running, sled work, and lunges, HYROX asks a lot of each leg on its own, which is exactly why this exercise earns a spot on their prehab list. The rear-foot-elevated split squat helps build single-leg strength, balance, and control while challenging the quads, glutes, and hamstrings all at once. It can also help expose side-to-side differences that are easy to miss in bilateral lifts. For HYROX specifically, that matters. This movement trains the kind of lower-body strength and stability that carries over to powerful lunges, stronger sled work, and more efficient running when fatigue starts to set in.

Good luck to Matt and Mike this weekend, and stay tuned for more HYROX tips!

Our therapists, Matt and Mike, are headed to HYROX NYC as partners. This is one of the warm-ups helping them get there.

If you’re running, lunging, pushing or pulling a sled, or getting into a deep wall ball, ankle mobility matters.
In this warm-up, Mike Canino, PT, DPT, and Matthew Procopio, PT, DPT, use a light resistance band to help improve ankle dorsiflexion, the motion that allows your knee to move forward over your foot. When that motion is limited, the body often finds other ways to compensate, which can affect everything from squat depth to running mechanics.

The goal here is not to fatigue the area. It is to open up the joint, improve the quality of the movement, and help you feel more efficient going into training. By pairing joint mobilization with active movement, this drill can help improve lower-body mechanics and reduce unnecessary stress on the knees and hips.

Special thanks to hosting Spear for a HYROX prehab session!

Congratulations to our Faculty Coordinator Genevieve Smith, PT, DPT, OCS, AIB-VRC! She recently earned her EdD in Movement Science from Teacher's College, Columbia University 🎓

Genevieve's concentration was in Motor Learning and Control, with a focus on cognitive motor interference of postural control. During her time at Columbia, Genevieve gained expertise in teaching and learning, clinical inquiry and research, and the biomechanical analysis of human movement.

Genevieve's dissertation thesis, "Sensory Integration and Cognitive Motor Interference in Older Adults with Mild Cognitive Impairment," examined sensory integration and cognitive motor interference of postural control in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment. APDM wearable sensors were used to collect postural sway data while participants completed static balance tests with a dual cognitive task. The results suggest older adults with mild cognitive impairment demonstrate different task prioritization strategies compared to cognitively healthy older adults during static balance conditions.

Genevieve says she is especially thankful to her mentors and colleagues at Spear for their consistent support throughout this journey to make it possible for her to achieve this dream. Congratulations to Genevieve on this huge accomplishment! 🎉

Out on the court with helping their volleyball players stay a Bump-Set-Spike ahead.

Our team led injury screenings focused on movement, strength, and the small things that make a big difference over the course of a season. A few quick adjustments now can mean fewer setbacks later.

Always a great day working with athletes who care about how they move and putting them in a better position to keep doing what they love!
