Hair Thinning During Menopause: What’s Happening & What Helps

If your hair is thinning, you’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. Many women notice changes in their hair during menopause, and it can feel significant.

What can contribute:

Hormone shifts. Estrogen helps keep hair in its growth phase, so changes can shorten that phase.
Androgens becoming more prominent in relative terms, which can affect follicles.
Nutrition gaps in protein, iron, B vitamins, or zinc.
Inflammation and stress.

Why it can feel more visible for Black women:
Natural hair texture and styling practices can make thinning more noticeable, especially along the edges and parts. Gentle styling matters.

What helps:

Protein at every meal. Hair is made of protein.
Iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Get iron levels checked if you’re concerned.
Omega-3s and antioxidants. Fatty fish, walnuts, flax, citrus, and berries.
Scalp care. Gentle massage, a gentle cleanser, and deep conditioning.
Lower tension. Loose protective styles beat tight braids and buns.
Less heat. Your hair may be more fragile right now.

When to see a doctor:
If hair loss is sudden, severe, or patchy, see a dermatologist. Most menopause-related thinning is gradual and diffuse.

Bone Health During Menopause: Prevention Starts Now

Your bones are living tissue, and they respond to what you do now.

Estrogen helps slow bone loss. When estrogen drops in menopause, bone loss can accelerate. Many women don’t know this until a bone density test or a fracture shows it.

Black women and bone health:
Black women are less likely to be screened and diagnosed with osteoporosis. Standard testing and assumptions about bone strength can mean risk goes unnoticed. That’s a healthcare gap, and you can advocate around it.

How to protect your bones:

Strength training 2-3x per week. Start with bodyweight or light weights. Focus on good form.
Weight-bearing movement. Walking, dancing, and hiking all work bone against gravity.
Calcium from food first. Leafy greens, fortified plant milk, fish with bones, almonds, and seeds.
Vitamin D and magnesium. Both support calcium use. Food first, supplements when needed.
Enough protein. Bone needs protein to rebuild.
Limit inflammatory foods and alcohol. Both can increase bone loss.

Ask your doctor:
“Should I get a DEXA scan?” “What are my risk factors?” “Can you refer me to an osteoporosis specialist if needed?”

Don’t wait for a fracture to ask. Ask your doctor whether a bone density test is right for you, and tell me in the comments if you’ve had one.

Sexuality During Menopause: Reclaiming Intimacy & Desire

Menopause changes your body, and that includes how you experience intimacy. Those changes are physiological. They are not a personal failing.

What changes:

Vaginal dryness, because estrogen supports lubrication
Slower arousal, and or***ms that may feel different
Desire that rises, falls, or simply shifts
Body image changes that affect how you feel in your skin

Both are normal:
Some women feel more desire in menopause, when hormonal swings settle. Others feel less. Both deserve respect.

Talking with a partner:
“My body feels different right now.” “I need more time.” “I need lube.” “I want intimacy even if I don’t want s*x.” These conversations are vulnerable, and they are essential. A good partner wants to know what serves you.

Practical support:

Use a quality vaginal moisturizer regularly, and lubricant during s*x. This is smart, not shameful.
Desire may return as stress decreases and rest improves. Sometimes it becomes the new normal. Either way, you’re okay.
Dress and move in ways that make you feel powerful.

For Black women:
Our s*xuality has been controlled, hypers*xualized, and policed for generations. Reclaiming it in menopause is an act of ownership. Your body is worthy of pleasure on your terms.

This is a conversation many of us never had. If you’re comfortable, share one thing you wish someone had told you in the comments.

Breathwork for Menopause: Calm Your Nervous System

Your breath is the one tool you always have. It costs nothing and needs no equipment.

During menopause, your nervous system is working harder. Estrogen changes make your body more reactive to stress and temperature. That’s not anxiety you created. It’s physiology.

Why breath helps:
Your vagus nerve connects your brain to your body. Slow, conscious breathing supports your parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) system, which tells your body it’s safe to settle.

Practices to try:

Box breathing (4-4-4-4): Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Repeat 5-10 times. Use it during hot flashes or anxiety.
Extended exhale: Inhale 4, exhale 6-8. Great before bed or during stress.
4-7-8: Inhale 4, hold 7, exhale 8. Repeat 4 times.

During a hot flash:

Use box breathing
Splash cool water on your wrists and neck
Move to a cooler space
Keep breathing intentionally

Your breath won’t erase menopause, but it can help you respond to it with more steadiness.

“Movement isn’t punishment during menopause. It’s how you reclaim your body.

Estrogen helps protect joints and muscle recovery. When it drops, aching joints and stiffness are real physiology.

What helps:
✓ Walking, 30 minutes most days
✓ Swimming or water aerobics
✓ Strength training 2x a week
✓ Yin yoga and stretching
✓ Dancing (joy counts)

The rule: sharp pain means stop. Mild rebuilding discomfort is okay. Learn the difference.

“You made it through Week 2.

Let me celebrate that.

You learned about the research gap—why you’re invisible in menopause science. You learned about medical trauma—why you don’t trust doctors. You learned about your cardiovascular health, your sleep, your skin, your supplement protocol.

You learned the hard truths.

WEEK 2 RECAP:

Day 8 — Research Gaps
Black women’s menopause is under-researched. Dosing protocols, symptom profiles, treatment guidelines—built without us. Applied to us.

Day 9 — Medical Trauma
Your doctor dismissed you. Now menopause is triggering those memories. Your nervous system is protecting you based on real harm.

Day 10 — Cardiovascular Health
Your heart disease risk climbs faster during menopause. Black women experience earlier onset, longer duration, more severe symptoms.

Day 11 — Sleep
Night sweats. Insomnia. Racing thoughts. Your sleep matters. Recovery matters.

Day 12 — Nutrition for Skin
You can eat your way to a glow. Real glow comes from within. Omega-3s, antioxidants, vitamin C, collagen-builders.

Day 13 — Supplements That Work
Not all supplements work. Dosing matters. Quality matters. Evidence-based protocols matter.

WEEK 3 IS COMING:

Movement. Resilience. Community. How to integrate everything into your actual life.

And I have something coming in January. Something I’ve been thinking about for years.

“Not all supplements work.

You’re taking Black Cohosh but hot flashes still wake you up. You’re on magnesium but can’t sleep. You’re spending money on supplements that don’t move the needle.

Here’s why: wrong dose, wrong form, wrong quality, or wrong supplement for YOUR specific symptoms.

SUPPLEMENTS THAT ACTUALLY WORK FOR MENOPAUSE SYMPTOMS:

✓ Magnesium Glycinate (200-400mg before bed)
→ Supports sleep, reduces anxiety, eases muscle tension

✓ Black Cohosh (40-80mg daily)
→ Reduces hot flashes and night sweats

✓ Sage (300-330mg daily)
→ Specifically reduces night sweats and hot flashes

✓ Ashwagandha KSM-66 (300mg)
→ Stress resilience, mood support, anxiety reduction

✓ Valerian Root
→ Sleep support (works well with magnesium)

✓ Passionflower
→ Nervous system calm, anxiety relief

✓ Omega-3 Fatty Acids (1000-2000mg EPA/DHA)
→ Reduces inflammation, supports cardiovascular health

✓ Vitamin D3 (1000-2000 IU daily)
→ Bone health, mood support, immune function

CRITICAL POINTS:
Quality matters. Not all supplements are created equal. Third-party tested matters. Dosing matters—too little doesn’t work, too much can backfire. Integration with food-first nutrition matters.

Supplements are medicine. Treat them that way.

“Stop blaming your skincare routine.

Your menopause skin is changing from the inside. Hormonal shifts = dryness, inflammation, hyperpigmentation. Your skin needs nourishment from WITHIN.

Nutrition is medicine for your glow.

FOODS FOR GLOWING MENOPAUSE SKIN:
✓ Omega-3s (wild salmon, flax, walnuts)
✓ Antioxidants (dark leafy greens, berries, turmeric)
✓ Vitamin C (citrus, bell peppers, kale)
✓ Collagen-builders (bone broth, citrus + vitamin C)
✓ Zinc (oysters, pumpkin seeds, grass-fed beef)
✓ Water (hydration from within)

ANTI-INFLAMMATORY STRATEGY:
Out: Processed foods, refined sugar, excess seed oils
In: Colorful vegetables, quality proteins, healthy fats, anti-inflammatory herbs

WHY THIS MATTERS FOR MELANATED SKIN:
Melanated skin is prone to inflammation and hyperpigmentation. During menopause, these intensify. You need extra antioxidant support, anti-inflammatory foods, and strategic nutrition.

Real glow doesn’t come from expensive skincare alone. It comes from what you eat.

Your skin is hungry for nourishment. Click here for the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LH3WTjXG03k
