Beyond Rest: The Power of Active Concussion Recovery

For years, concussion care was summarized as "sit in a dark room until you feel better." But modern neurorehabilitation proves that prolonged rest alone rarely resolves persistent symptoms.

When headaches, dizziness, screen intolerance, and brain fog linger beyond a few weeks, it is known as Post-Concussion Syndrome (PCS)—and it requires targeted, active neurorehabilitation.

At Delaware NeuroRehab, our physician-directed team takes an active approach to rewire and recalibrate the brain following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and concussions:
Our Comprehensive Concussion Programs Target:
• 👁️ Neuro-Visual Rehabilitation: Retraining eye tracking, convergence, and depth perception to eliminate dizziness, reading fatigue, and light sensitivity.
• ⚖️ Vestibular & Balance Retraining: Calibrating inner ear and balance pathways to stop motion sickness and unsteadiness.
• 🏃 Sub-Symptom Exertion Therapy: Safely re-introducing guided physical activity without triggering symptom flare-ups.
• 🧠 Cognitive Stamina Protocols: Restoring memory, focus, and multi-tasking skills so you can return to work, school, and athletics safely.

Directed by board-certified physiatrist Dr. Haresh Sampathkumar, MD, our multidisciplinary clinicians guide you through every phase of recovery—empowering you to move past symptoms and reclaim your life.

October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month!
Did you know that the autonomic nervous system quietly regulates nearly all of our body’s automatic functions—including heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, digestion, and breathing?

When that system experiences dysfunction, it is known as Dysautonomia.
🧠 Dysautonomia & Brain Injury:
Following an Acquired or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), concussion, or stroke, damage to autonomic pathways can trigger persistent, confusing symptoms that disrupt daily life and slow recovery.

⚠️ Common Symptoms Include:
🌀 Dizziness or lightheadedness when standing
❤️ Rapid changes in heart rate (such as POTS) & blood pressure fluctuations
🔋 Overwhelming fatigue & exercise intolerance
🌡️ Difficulty regulating body temperature
🌫️ Cognitive "brain fog" and concentration challenges
🍽️ Digestive and gastrointestinal complications

🤝 Whole-Person Neuro-Rehabilitation:
At Delaware NeuroRehab, we recognize that true healing requires supporting the whole person—brain, body, and nervous system.

Directed by board-certified physiatrist Dr. Haresh Sampathkumar, MD, our multidisciplinary team provides individualized neurorehabilitation designed to restore autonomic stability, functional stamina, and long-term quality of life.

This October, join us in raising awareness, increasing understanding, and supporting recovery!

Regaining Independence: How Occupational Therapy Helps Master IADLs!

In neurorehabilitation, true recovery is about more than just moving—it’s about getting back to the life, routines, and responsibilities you love.

That’s where Occupational Therapy (OT) and IADLs (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) come in!

While basic ADLs cover self-care like dressing and hygiene, IADLs are the complex everyday tasks required to live safely and independently at home and in the community.

Following a stroke, brain injury, or neurological condition, our specialized Occupational Therapy team at Delaware NeuroRehab works with patients to rebuild confidence in:

• 🍳 Meal Preparation & Cooking: Safely navigating the kitchen, chopping, using appliances, and multitasking.

• 💊 Medication & Schedule Management: Developing cognitive strategies, checklists, and memory tools to manage health routines.

• 🛒 Community Mobility & Errands: Shopping, handling money, navigating stores, and building stamina outside the home.

• 💻 Communication & Technology: Using smartphones, computers, email, and adaptive devices to stay connected.

• 🏡 Home & Safety Management: Laundry, housekeeping, and modifying the home environment to prevent falls.

Every OT program at Delaware NeuroRehab is personalized to your real-world goals—bridging the gap from clinical therapy to everyday life!
