After facilitating each cycle of the 8 week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)course, I deeply reflect on my time with the group. I am, again, in awe of the wisdom of my participants and the discoveries made through the learning and deepening of mindfulness practice. The courage they reveal while meeting the beauty of life and the dreaded, unannounced, and unwanted difficulties that arise is inspiring. When turning towards oneself rather than away, a radical shift often happens. I have learned so much from the deep sharing that takes place and am forever changed each time. Strangers at week 1 to companions on life’s journey by week 8. This passage reminds me of what takes place in this classroom. We can all be reminded, although it may not look as we had hoped, “anything we love can be saved”, including ourselves. 💚

There is a beautiful complexity of growth within the human soul. In order to glimpse this, it is helpful to visualize the mind as a tower of windows. Sadly, many people remain trapped at the one window, looking out every day at the same scene in the same way. Real growth is experienced when you draw back from that one window, turn, and walk around the inner tower of the soul and see all the different windows that await your gaze. Through these different windows, you can see new vistas of possibility, presence, and creativity. Complacency, habit, and blindness often prevent you from feeling your life. So much depends on the frame of vision -- the window through which you look.

Silence and reflection are powerful whenever you choose to do it, but there is something special about gathering to practice in this way with community. I honor all those that decided to join me for the 8 week MBSR class and the great work of getting to know oneself better, finding more skillful ways to manage the daily stresses of life, and recognize the joy woven in between. Today’s All Day of Silent Practice is the halfway mark, a chance to come close to all your experiences, which is your very life. Looking forward to the day. 💚
