We’re excited to share that on May 16th, Hills & Dales, along with our community, installed a temporary, inclusive streetway mural! The vision behind this project was to increase accessibility for individuals with a variety of mobility needs, allowing them not only to appreciate art, but to actively participate in creating it. That’s why the mural was painted on a roadway rather than a traditional vertical wall! With creativity and adaptability, artists of all abilities were able to take part. This unique art experience was open to everyone, and we even had a few enthusiastic tourists join in!

A professional team of muralists from Enodia Studio, selected by a review committee, developed the final design. The mural is now a vibrant feature near the intersection of historic 4th Street and Bluff Street in Dubuque. It showcases the Mississippi River and highlights animals and plants native to the Driftless Area, including a fox, muskrat, red-shouldered blackbird, common darner dragonfly, as well as lupine, prairie sunflowers, and bloodroot.

We encourage you to visit and see the mural for yourself, and for an even more scenic view, take a ride up the Fenelon Elevator (Fenelon Place Elevator Company)!

The project was supported in part through a Sustainable Dubuque grant, and in no specific order, a sincere THANK YOU goes to the following businesses, organizations, and individuals who helped take the mural from concept to reality!

You are invited to be a part of an amazing, new event as Hills & Dales installs through community participation, a temporary, inclusive streetway mural on May 16, 2026 - a Community Paint Day!

Why a streetway mural, rather than a traditional vertical wall you ask? To allow for more equitable and inclusive participation!

Imagine this being your chance to leave your mark on Dubuque by applying paint to covered wheelchair or walker tires and rolling through a designated area of the mural, or using a roller extension for greater reach, or by simply applying paint in traditional form with a paint brush. 💜 No matter your ability (or artistic skill) and thanks to a bit of creativity in how paint can be applied to the roadway, we want to help you become an artist through this unique and beautiful mural! 💜

Businesses will be open, so be sure to support them if you attend the Community Paint Day!

🎨A professional team of muralists from Cincinnati and a team of local volunteers will be leading the project. The event is designed to be a simple community gathering where anyone is invited to visit, observe and interact!

We are looking for volunteers for a variety of roles and various shifts throughout the Community Paint Day (and on Sunday, May 17th as final details and touches are applied to the mural).

-Additional details and information will be shared with registrants and volunteers following sign-up.
-While we can’t guarantee that things won’t get a bit messy, we of course will have various applications available to best protect wheels/equipment/etc. Water and clean-up supplies will also be on-site.
-Any event updates or weather-related delays or cancellations will be posted on the Hills & Dales page, in addition to text messages through Calendly (if registered to paint).
