This isn’t my typical before and after post. A little over a year ago one of my long-time guests came in and told me she was diagnosed with breast cancer. As her hair dresser I wanted to support her in anyway I could. After she had her port put in, we gave her a sassy short pixie cut. After a few treatments, I went to her house to shave it off because the shedding was so excessive. Today was a celebratory day because her hair was finally long enough to color again. She gets to be a sassy redhead again, she gets to be herself again.
If you’re going through this, please understand your hairdresser will guide you through the process and your hair will come back. As hairdressers we are there for you, your prom hair, your wedding hair, your pregnancy hair, your child’s first haircut. These are exciting and wonderful times in your life, but we are there for the good, the bad, and the ugly. We are there for your breakups, your divorce, your sickness, when you lose a pet, and when you lose a loved one. We touch so much more than hair in our chairs.
One of the things we discussed is thank God she finished her treatments before the pandemic hit. Please understand that when you are out running errands you don’t know who’s been through chemo recently, it’s not always obvious who is high risk. You don’t know who else lives in their house or what they are going through. I think it’s important to be kind and wear a mask not to protect yourself, but to protect others.
