🤱🏽💜 September 1–7 is Workplace Lactation Week!
This year’s theme, “Work. Pump. Advance. Empowering the modern parent.” calls attention to the importance of creating workplaces where lactating parents have the support they need to continue human milk feeding while also thriving and advancing in their careers.
At Family Matters Durham, lactation support is also an important part of our work to reduce infant mortality and improve outcomes for babies and families.
One way we support this goal is through the WHO and UNICEF’s Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, with a specific focus on Steps 3 and 10. Step 3 emphasizes discussing the importance and management of breastfeeding with pregnant people and their families, while Step 10 focuses on connecting parents and infants with timely, ongoing support and care. Evidence shows that implementation of the Ten Steps can improve breastfeeding initiation, exclusivity, and duration.
And that support extends beyond pregnancy and the hospital stay. It also means creating environments where parents can continue their feeding goals when they return to work and move through their communities. 💜
📍 That’s why we’re excited to highlight the Mamava Lactation Pod located on the first floor of the Durham County Health Department, where Family Matters Durham is located. The pod provides a private space for nursing or pumping parents visiting or working in the building.

This Workplace Lactation Week, we’re celebrating working parents and continuing our commitment to making lactation support accessible, practical, and part of the communities where families live and work.
