A peek at Equine Facilitated Wellness.
On a rainy weekend, we welcomed participants from Barefoot Circus to join us for a wellness session with the horses.
Atlas and Nugget greeted everyone — one by one, making their way from person to person and not missing anyone. I’ve watched them do this many times now, and it never ceases to amaze me.
Premo, on the other hand, chose to connect with only one or two people — quietly, but in a way that felt meaningful.
One thing we always honor when working with the horses is that they have their own agency. They can choose to participate — or not. Because of that, things are never entirely predictable. And yet, somehow, they often seem to offer exactly the lesson that is needed in that moment.
The horses have needs of their own, too. So rather than always looking to them to comfort, heal, or teach us, sometimes the relationship asks us to turn our attention toward them.
And in caring for, listening to, or simply being present with another being, we sometimes discover something within ourselves that we hadn’t recognized before.
