Did you know this about the history of homeopathy in America? 🌿
In 1873, Boston University School of Medicine was founded as a homeopathic medical school, and from its beginning, it was open to both women and men, something especially significant during a time when women had very limited opportunities to pursue a medical education.
In 1874, Boston University School of Medicine merged with the New England Female Medical College, an institution with roots going back to 1848 that had been established specifically to provide women with medical education.
The New England Female Medical College had already made history by helping open the doors of medicine to women. When it became part of Boston University, its students were incorporated into a medical school that taught homeopathic medicine and educated women alongside men.
Boston University was not the first homeopathic medical college in America, but it became an important part of a much larger homeopathic medical system that existed throughout the United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
At the time, homeopathy wasn’t simply something practiced on the outskirts of medicine. There were homeopathic medical schools, hospitals, physicians, pharmacies, and professional organizations across the country.
I find this history fascinating because most people have never been taught this part of American medical history.
Homeopathy has a history stretching back more than 200 years, and its role in American medicine was once far greater than many people realize today. 🌿
