New patient exams at Eagle Acupuncture always include one thing most people don’t expect: a good look at your tongue. 👅

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the tongue is one of our most valuable diagnostic tools. Its color, shape, coating, and even the tiny cracks or indentations can tell us a lot about what’s happening inside your body, often before you’ve described a single symptom.

A pale tongue might point to blood deficiency. A red tip can signal stress or heart fire. A thick coating may mean digestive imbalance. Scalloped edges often show up when the body is fatigued or under strain.

It sounds simple, but tongue diagnosis has been refined over thousands of years of clinical observation. Paired with pulse diagnosis and a thorough health history, it helps us build a complete picture of your health and create a treatment plan that’s actually specific to you, not a generic protocol.

So next time we ask you to stick out your tongue, know that we’re not just checking a box. We’re reading a map.

Have you ever had a practitioner look at your tongue before? What did they tell you? 👇

Have you met Mr. Tony Burris, LAc, MSTOM?

With over 25 years of clinical experience, Tony is a trusted leader in acupuncture and integrative medicine here at Eagle Acupuncture. He specializes in complex, chronic pain that too often gets a temporary fix instead of a real answer. He treats difficult to treat pain syndromes including migraines, fibromyalgia, hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome, chronic sports injury and multiple sclerosis.

He has treated some of the most famous pro athletes in the world. Next time you see him, ask him yourself! Are you a Chargers fan? The Redskins or Commanders fan? Denver Broncos, Lions or the Bears…he may have some stories for you.

*Tony*’s approach goes beyond masking symptoms. Using acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, he works to calm nerve pathways, reduce inflammation, and support the body’s own healing response, offering a safe, drug-free path when conventional treatment has fallen short or is taking too long to heal.

He also works closely with men’s health and sports injury recovery, helping athletes and everyday patients get back to moving and living without pain holding them back.

Alongside Dr. Kristen Burris, his wife, Tony has helped build a small-town practice rooted in real, lasting relief, not band-aid solutions.

Hibiscus tea has a special place in our story here at Eagle Acupuncture. 🌺

Back in Chinese medical school, Kristen showed up to every clinical round as an intern with the same thing: a thermos of hibiscus tea. Day after day, session after session, Tony, her assistant at the time, noticed. That small, sweet detail was one of the first things that drew him to her, long before she became a doctor, long before they became partners in life and in practice.

There’s something fitting about it. In TCM, red is the color that nourishes the Heart, and tart hibiscus has long been used to support it. Maybe it makes sense that something meant to nourish the heart would also be where two hearts started to connect.

Now, more than 30 years later, we still love recommending hibiscus tea to our patients, not just for what it may do for blood pressure and heart health, but because it carries a little bit of our story too.

💬 Is there a small, ordinary detail in our love story that ended up meaning more than you expected? We’d love to hear it.

They met in Chinese medical school 27 years ago and three months later Tony knew he was going to pop the question 💍 to Kristen! For Kristen it was love at first sight. They have built a beautiful life together working side-by-side for 25 years and not one day has passed when either of them said they wished they didn’t work together. Some people were just meant to be together for life. Help us wish them a very Happy Anniversary! Do you believe in love at first sight?

Being chosen among 200 women is always a joy, a surprise, and an honor. 💛

For the past year, I’ve volunteered to send cards to women going through some of life’s hardest seasons: divorce, illness, the loss of a family member, a job lost. My role is simple but meaningful, to remind each woman that a community is thinking of her and holding space for her during a hard time.

I don’t know if that’s why I was chosen, but I’m deeply grateful to receive this award for the second time in five years. It’s a traveling honor, passed to a new woman each month, so I only get to keep it for about 30 days before it moves on. I always miss it once it’s gone, but those 30 days of getting to hold it as the “honored one” feel wonderful every time.

Grateful for this community of women who show up for each other. Who has shown up for you during a hard season?

What if your fertility plan wasn’t generic, but built entirely around you?

Eagle Acupuncture’s doctor supports your fertility journey, and we love when miracles are born.

Fertility struggles are exhausting, and generic advice that doesn’t fit your actual situation only adds to the frustration. That’s why we build your fertility plan around your specific diagnosis and treatment stage, offering comprehensive care through acupuncture, TCM herbal medicine, and functional medicine lab tests, or a combination of IVF acupuncture and herbal medicine depending on where you are in your journey.

Every cycle brings its own moments of hope and its own hard days. A personalized plan that considers your medical history and current health can bring real clarity and peace of mind when you need it most.

You are not a diagnosis on a chart. You are a whole person, and your care should reflect that.

If you’re navigating fertility challenges or repeated loss, we’re here to walk alongside you with a plan built for your body, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

Estradiol and ADHD medication shortages are real. Here’s how we can help in the meantime.

Medication shortages are frustrating, and right now many women are struggling to fill prescriptions for certain doses of estradiol and ADHD medications. If that’s you, you’re not alone, and we want you to know there’s support available while you navigate the gap.

For estradiol shortages, acupuncture and TCM herbal medicine can offer relief for hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, skin irritation, joint pain, low libido, memory concerns, hair loss, emotional ups and downs like: anger, rage, sadness, and irritability.

For ADHD, our approach focuses on mood regulation, nervous system reset, memory support, concentration, and overall brain balance. Most patients feel less anxious can focus for longer bursts and sleep more soundly.

We’re not here to replace your prescriber. We’re here to support your body and your nervous system while you work with your doctor. If you’re feeling the strain of a shortage right now, acupuncture and herbal medicine may be able to ease some of what you’re experiencing until things stabilize.

💬 Are you feeling the effects of a medication shortage right now? We’d love to hear what’s been hardest, and how we might help.

5 Reasons Women Lose Hair (and What Actually Helps)

Hair loss isn’t just one thing, and it’s rarely just about the hair. Here’s what we look for, and how Chinese Medicine and natural remedies address the root.

1. Postpartum depletion
Birth pulls heavily on your Qi and Blood. In TCM, hair is the surplus of Blood, so it’s often the first to suffer. Helps: warm nourishing food, real rest, and Blood building herbs like Dang Gui.

2. Stress and Liver Qi stagnation
Chronic stress blocks Qi flow, so Blood can’t reach the scalp. Helps: acupuncture to move stuck Qi, plus slower mornings and real downtime.

3. Spleen Qi weakness
Your Spleen turns food into Qi and Blood. Skipped meals and cold or processed food make that harder. Helps: warm, cooked meals and digestion supporting herbs like Astragalus.

4. Kidney Jing depletion
Kidneys hold your deepest reserves and govern hair. This depletes with age, illness, or childbirth. Helps: Kidney tonifying herbs and protecting your energy instead of running on empty.

5. Hormonal shifts
Thyroid changes, postpartum drops, and perimenopause all show up in hair health. TCM balances the whole system, not just the hormone. Helps: acupuncture and herbal formulas built for your specific pattern.

Important: never take a single herb like Dang Gui or Astragalus alone. Herbal medicine only works when it’s balanced in a formula built for you, taking one herb by itself can create new problems. Always work with a TCM doctor.

Healthy hair reflects a well nourished body. Heal the root, and the hair usually follows.

Which of these sounds most like what you’re dealing with?

Before Eagle Acupuncture, we were two broke students in Chinese medical school, splitting cheap meals between breaks because that’s what we could afford. We were hungry in every sense: hungry to learn, hungry to actually understand this medicine, and yes, hungry because student budgets don’t leave much room for anything else.

Those breaks between classes, ducking out for whatever food we could scrape together, ended up teaching us as much as the textbooks did. We dove into the culture behind the medicine, not just the theory. That’s stayed with us for 30 years.

Now here we are, three decades later, still together, still practicing, running a clinic in Eagle, Idaho that grew out of those early days with nothing but passion and each other. We look back on that season and just feel grateful. Grateful for the hunger that pushed us to learn it right, and grateful it led us here. This month we will celebrate 25 years in practice together and 24 years married.

What’s a season in your life that started out with nothing but somehow shaped everything after it?

Before Eagle Acupuncture existed, there was a sentence that changed everything: “You may never have children.” I remember exactly where I was standing when I heard it. That fear doesn’t really leave. It just waits for you to find something to do with it. For me, that something was Traditional Chinese Medicine. Not a last resort, but a real answer, backed by thousands of years of practice, and eventually, by our own family.

People ask how a husband-and-wife team ends up running a clinic together for over two decades. The honest answer: we built it the same way we built our family, one appointment, one patient, one hard year at a time. Tony and I didn’t just find acupuncture. We found each other through it, and the courage to bet our whole life on something most people in Idaho hadn’t heard of yet. Family came first, always. The clinic grew up around our kids, not the other way around.

Eagle, Idaho isn’t a big city, and that’s exactly the point. When you’ve been voted “Best in Boise” for years running, it’s not because of a marketing budget. It’s because your patients stop you at the grocery store to tell you how their treatment is going. Thousands of patients since 2001. Some started as fertility patients and are now bringing their own kids in for care. That’s what a small-town practice of caring looks like.

Now our youngest has left for college, and the house is quieter than it’s been in over two decades. Nobody prepares you for empty nest, how it can feel like grief and relief in the same breath. Tony and I are learning, in real time, how to let go of the family-first chapter that defined us for so long, and reconnect to who we are as partners now. This clinic was always about family. Turns out that includes ours too.

If you’re in your own season of letting go, we’re right there with you. That’s what this Year of Connection is all about.

Stay tuned for more on this series.
