Hope you’ll join me at dusk✨

On the last day of August, the women knew to walk slowly.

They knew the day was not an ordinary day. It was the eve of the turning — the last afternoon before September stepped forward with her cooler light and her shorter hours and her long amber shadows falling across the fields.

And they knew that on such a day, an Ancient was waiting.

She has no other name. She has only ever been called the Ancient at the Threshold.

She stands at the door of every crossing — the door between one season and the next, one hour and the next, one chapter of a woman's life and the one waiting on the other side. She has stood there since the earliest hours. She was there when the first spring turned into the first summer, and she was there when the first summer turned into the first fall, and she has been there at every turning since.

She carries only one thing.

A small cup of clear water.

She offers it to any woman who is willing to stop, on the eve of a turning, and drink to the season she is leaving.

Not the season she is walking toward.

The one she is leaving.

That is the whole of her teaching. She does not ask you to bless what is coming. She asks you to bless what fed you.

And so, on the last afternoon of August, the women would step out of their houses in the low gold light, and they would walk to the edge of their gardens, or to the top of a small hill, or to the doorway of the field they had tended all summer, and they would stand very quietly — and the Ancient at the Threshold would come.

She came the way she always came. Softly. Without footsteps. Only a small cool presence at the woman's side, and a cup held out in an open palm.

Drink, she would say, to what you are leaving.

Drink to the long warm evenings. Drink to the tomatoes that ripened on the sill. Drink to the birds that raised their young in the eaves. Drink to the light that stayed with you until nine. Drink to the woman you were in June, and to the woman you have become since. Drink to the wild green months you have been given — and thank them, before you cross.

And the woman would take the cup.

And she would drink.

And in that one small swallow — cool, clear, tasting of the whole of the season — the Ancient would gather up August on her behalf. Every warm afternoon. Every long evening. Every barefoot morning. Every fruit and every flower and every hour of it. All of it, taken into the woman's own body, one last time, before the turning.

You have been fed, the Ancient would say. Now you may cross.

And the woman would step forward, into September, with the whole of August safely inside her.

Never lost.

Only carried.

The Ancient at the Threshold will be waiting for you on Monday.

She will come at dusk on the last day of August, in the last low light before September begins. You do not have to see her. You only have to stop, for a moment, in a doorway or at the edge of a garden or beside an open window — and be willing to drink.

Do not cross into September without honoring August.

She fed you.

The long light. The tomato on the sill. The bare feet in the wet grass. The evening the crickets sang louder than they had all year. The morning you sat on the step with your coffee and watched the mist rise off the field.

All of it was hers.

Lift the cup she offers you.

Drink to what you are leaving.

And then, gently — walk through.

Celebrating Dolly has me thinking about the joy of reading books and how often I squander that pleasure by putting myself under pressure to consume pages.

We are all craving deep reading, deep thinking, and deep connection — and these all require deep time.

I went back this morning and re-read the interview we did with Maya Smart - Parent Educator and Literacy Advocate and was drawn to her phrase the “privilege of focus.”

Let’s start a spiritual book club where we read what we want, when we want, no meetings or deadlines - just a shared reframe of deep time as subversive in a world of shallow distraction, addictive scrolling, and unrelenting attention grabbing. ❤️📖❤️
