Venus flytraps are world-famous, but their wild home is shockingly small.

The real twist is that the plant everyone recognizes is also one officials have to protect like buried treasure.

In the wild, they grow naturally only in a narrow slice of the Carolinas, mostly around Wilmington, where wet pine savannas give them the strange conditions they need.

The soil there is so poor that the plant became a tiny green hunter, snapping shut on insects to steal nutrients the ground refuses to give.

That rarity made them a target. Poachers have dug them up by the hundreds, because a small carnivorous plant can carry serious black-market value.

North Carolina eventually made wild theft a felony, turning a backyard-looking plant into a protected natural prize.

Some treasures do not glitter. Some wait in the grass with teeth.
