Jody Medor Coaching For women tired of wondering, “Why do I keep doing this?”
Understand yourself before you try to change yourself.

Have you ever noticed how fast you look for the next thing to try?

I keep coming back to this question. What if understanding why comes before figuring out what to change?

I’m starting to realize I ask a lot of questions.

I always thought I was just curious. I want to know why someone thinks the way they do. Why they made that choice. What’s bothering them. What they really want.

I do it with my family. I do it at work. I do it pretty much everywhere.

But I’ve been thinking about this differently lately.

We spend a lot of time looking outside ourselves for answers — with our health, our choices, our relationships, even the direction our life is going.

I’m not sure we need another answer as much as we need better questions.

Because you can know exactly what you should do and still have no idea why you keep doing something else.

That’s the part I’m interested in.

Not just, “What should I do?”

“Why am I doing what I’m doing?”

I think there’s a hell of a lot more to learn about ourselves in that question.

I had some health testing done this week, and I’ll admit it…there’s one number I’m nervous to see.

My cholesterol.

I’ve had good numbers before. I’ve also watched them change.

And here’s the thing: I know what I’m “supposed” to do.

I know what eating well looks like. I know movement matters. I know sleep matters.

Knowing isn’t really my problem.

And honestly, I don’t think it’s the problem for a lot of women.

We know a LOT.

We know we should go to bed earlier. Move our bodies. Eat better. Stress less. Say no more often. Put ourselves somewhere on our own list.

And yet knowing something and actually living it are two very different things.

That’s the part I’m interested in.

Because when that number comes back, I could look at it and immediately decide whether I’ve been “good” or “bad.”

Or I could get curious about what it’s telling me.

What was different?
What was going on in my life?
What changed?

I’m still hoping for a good number. 😂

But I’m trying to remember something I’ve become pretty convinced of:

Maybe the number isn’t a grade.

Maybe it’s information.

And there’s a big difference between judging yourself by the result and getting curious about what it might be telling you.

I hear women say, “I just want to feel like myself again.”

But I’ve been thinking about that.

I’m not sure I want to feel like my old self again.

There are things about her I really like. But there are also things she tolerated that I wouldn’t tolerate now. Things she worried about that don’t matter nearly as much anymore. Times she said yes when she really wanted to say no.

I’ve changed.

And I actually think that’s the point.

Maybe you’re noticing it too. You’re a little more direct. A little less interested in explaining yourself. Some things you used to want don’t fit anymore.

I don’t think we always need to find our way back to who we were.

Sometimes we need to get curious about who we are now.

And personally, I like her better.

I think a lot of women get to this point in life and realize something they weren’t expecting…

They don’t really know what they want.

Ask what your kids need? Easy.

What your partner likes? You probably know.

What needs to happen at work, what everyone is doing for the holidays, who needs a birthday card, what’s running low in the house? Somehow you know all of that too. 😂

But then someone asks, “What do YOU want?”

And suddenly it’s harder to answer.

I don’t think that means there’s something wrong with you.

I think when you’ve spent years paying attention to everyone else, it makes sense that your own wants can get a little harder to hear.

And I don’t think the answer is another list telling you what you should want either.

Maybe the first question is much simpler:

When was the last time you really asked yourself?

My mug says, “Never stop growing.”

I agree…but I don’t think growing means constantly finding something else about yourself to fix.

Women are surrounded by advice about what we should be doing.

Eat this.
Stop eating that.
Lift weights.
Walk more.
Sleep better.
Manage your stress.

None of it is necessarily bad advice.

But more advice isn’t always what we need.

Sometimes we need to slow down long enough to understand why the plans we keep making don’t fit our actual lives.

I don’t believe most women need more information first.

I think they need to understand themselves before trying to change themselves again.

Because growth isn’t always about trying harder.

Sometimes it starts with getting curious about where you are right now.

I noticed something today…

I hear from my kids way more on a Monday than I do on a Friday.

Friday? Everybody is good. They have plans, they’re out living their lives and apparently don’t need their mother.

Then Monday comes.

“Mom…”

And if you have grown kids, you probably know exactly what comes after that. It could be a question, something that happened at work, something they need to talk through, or sometimes just a phone call while they’re driving.

It made me laugh today because I don’t think I ever really thought about it before.

When they were little, being Mom was constant. Now they have their own lives and I can go days without hearing much at all.

But apparently Mondays are still for Mom.

Anyone else notice this with their grown kids, or is this just mine?

I know I still call my mom!

Boston this weekend for Chris Stapleton. ❤️ My schedule has been completely off. Later nights, different food, not my normal workouts and definitely not my normal routine.

This morning I found myself sitting outside with my coffee, enjoying the sun and watching this busy city move around me…and thinking about Monday. 😂 What I need to get back to, what I need to do, what I should be doing.

Those damn shoulds.

And I caught myself because I’m away. I had a great weekend. I’m sitting outside with a coffee and nowhere I need to be right now, yet part of my brain is already home.

Maybe you do this too. You finally get the weekend away, the quiet morning, dinner with someone you love, or even ten minutes where nobody needs anything from you, and somehow your mind has already moved on to what’s next. The laundry, the emails, Monday, the workout you missed, all the things you need to “get back on track” with.

Sometimes I wonder how many perfectly good moments we rush right through because we’re already thinking about the next one.

So yes, my schedule has been off. But maybe not everything that takes us out of our routine needs to be something we immediately fix. Maybe sometimes we’re just living our lives.

Monday will still be there tomorrow. Right now, I have coffee to drink and sunshine to enjoy. ❤️

I wonder how much noise we get used to carrying around without even realizing it.

That’s what I was thinking about when I sat here.

It had been a full week and I just wanted to get away for a little while. Not take a trip or make some big plan. I just wanted quiet.

You know how sometimes you finally get somewhere quiet, but your brain takes a while to catch up? 😂

You’re still thinking about work, something you need to remember, a conversation you had three days ago, what you need to do when you get home. All those little things that seem to take up space in your head.

And I wonder how many of us have gotten so used to that feeling that we don’t even notice it anymore.

Until things get quiet.

Then you realize how much you needed it.

That was me this week. Feet in the water, sitting on a rock, and very happy nobody needed anything from me for a little while. 😂
