Good evening - Welcome back to our series of educational posts about mental health!
Each Thursday you will find tidbits of information about various mental health disorders and how therapy can help. Tonight we will continue our look at a Dissociative Disorders by considering Depersonalization/derealization disorder.
This disorder is when one feels detached from his or her own body, thoughts or surroundings. It is sometimes described as floating above one’s body, viewing yourself in the third person, or moving through the world in a dream-like or foggy state.
Therapists often teach grounding skills (sensory, somatic) to help those suffering from this disorder to connect with the here and now. Once coping skills are established, the likely cause of symptoms (a stressful or traumatic event) is explored.
If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these symptoms, feel free to reach out to our group for support!
