Let’s Talk About Downsizing

Downsizing is an essential part of the healing process and the long-term health of your piercing. It also enhances the overall aesthetic once initial swelling has subsided.

When you are first pierced, your body naturally swells. To accommodate this, we use jewelry with additional length to allow room for that swelling. Typically, between 4–8 weeks (depending on the type of piercing), it’s time to return to your piercer to have the jewelry replaced with a properly fitted piece.

Once the swelling has gone down, wearing longer jewelry than necessary can lead to a variety of healing concerns. Excess movement may cause irritation bumps, uneven healing, snagging, prolonged inflammation, or even delay the healing process altogether.

This is your reminder to check in with your piercer and stay on top of your downsizing appointment. While some piercings may not experience immediate issues without downsizing, we always aim to minimize risk and support the smoothest healing possible because complications are never fun!
