From Dr. Cindy's bookshelf to yours...
Have you heard of Eudaimonia?
It’s an ancient Greek concept — translated as “human flourishing” — and it describes a state of living well, not just feeling good. It’s about purpose, connection, courage, and meaning. Since learning this term, it’s become the goal I hold for myself and my kids.
So how do we actually get there? Especially for humans we’re raising?
I recommend reading The Yes Brain by Dr. Daniel Siegel and Tina Payne Bryson. It’s written for parents, but it’ll teach you just as much about your own mind as it will about your child’s.
The book is rooted in neuroscience and gives parents strategies to help children develop resilience, curiosity, and courage, the building blocks of a flourishing life. The four core pillars of the “Yes Brain” are balance, resilience, insight, and empathy, and the book walks you through how to nurture each one.
Whether you’re a parent or not, this is a worthwhile read! If you’ve ever found yourself reacting instead of responding — as a parent or as a person — there’s something in here for you too.
