His mother woke up at 3 a.m. and traveled for hours to reach the mission, holding onto one hope: that her son might finally hear the world around him.

When his hearing aids were turned on, everything started to change. Slowly, he began making sounds. Then came one of the most beautiful moments of all, hearing him proudly say his vowel sounds out loud: “A, E, I, O, U.” It was a moment his mother had dreamed of for so long, finally becoming real.

Now, he has the opportunity to learn, communicate, and attend school alongside other children his age. What once felt distant is now becoming possible, one word and one sound at a time.

A mother’s love helped bring him here.
And now, his own voice is helping carry him forward.

Every child deserves the opportunity to fully connect with the world around them and the confidence to grow within it.

Deo Isaiah Secro, a lively 6-year-old from Mandaue, Cebu, is discovering a world he had never fully heard before.

The moment he received his hearing aids marked the beginning of something life-changing. His eyes sparkled with amazement as he began reacting to sounds in a whole new way. Little by little, he started finding his voice, creating sounds with the excitement of hearing himself for the very first time.

And in those moments, something beautiful began to unfold, not just new sounds, but new confidence, curiosity, and connection with the people who love him most.

At 86 years old, Mrs. Merina’s Family realized her hearing had gradually declined, making everyday conversations more difficult, especially in places with background noise. They found themselves speaking louder and repeating more often just to help her stay connected.

The legacy of William F. Austin is rooted in creating light through windows to the world, using hearing as a vehicle to reflect Starkey Hearing Foundation’s love for humanity. Mrs. Merina’s story is a beautiful reflection of that mission in action.

With hearing aids in her ears, Mrs. Merina is once again able to reconnect with her loved ones and engage more fully with the world around her.

Access changes everything.

In Ethiopia, a country of more than 100 million people, hearing care remains extremely scarce. For many communities, access to hearing healthcare is limited or nonexistent.

After graduating from Starkey Hearing Institute, Berhane returned home determined to make a difference. Today, he reaches those most in need, leading a small team, and showing up for every person he can.

On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we celebrate those creating access where it is needed most.

“Hearing is a miracle.”

It’s the one thing Graciela Castillo keeps coming back to.

Because in every patient interaction, she sees lives change through the power of hearing.

What she’s learning today will extend far beyond the classroom, reaching communities, families, and futures.

“My goal is to help as many patients as possible,” Graciela shares. “We are learning so much so we can go out, share that knowledge with others, and help more people integrate into society.”

The future of hearing healthcare in El Salvador is growing brighter through leaders trained at Starkey Hearing Institute.

John is 7 years old and has lived with profound hearing loss since birth. For his mom, hearing aids always felt out of reach because they were simply too expensive.

As John grew more curious about the world, her worry grew with him. Busy roads were frightening. If he wandered too far, he couldn’t hear her call his name or warn him of danger.

Then, in just a few minutes, everything changed.

After receiving his hearing aids, John lit up. Birds. Passing cars. His own laughter. He clapped beside his ears, discovering each new sound with wonder.

Now curious, expressive, and more connected to the world around him, John proudly points to his hearing aids, wanting everyone to see.

Because for John, hearing isn’t just sound. It’s safety, confidence, connection, and joy.

Early intervention changes everything.

The first three years of life are critical for brain development.

When children with hearing loss are identified and supported in the first six months, they build stronger language by age five—and are more likely to enter school ready to learn and stay on track.

That’s why Starkey Hearing Foundation brings care into the community. The WFA model reduces barriers, reaches children earlier, and supports them when it matters most.

Follow and share to help more children be found and supported earlier.

Sometimes, the most powerful sound in the world is laughter.

On this World Laughter Day, we’re celebrating the power of hearing for the first time… or the first time in a long time.

Because when someone reconnects to sound, it doesn’t just change what they hear—
it changes how they experience the world.

And sometimes, it sounds like laughter.

We’re grateful to share that with you. Follow along and share to help more moments like this be heard.

He didn’t just graduate from Starkey Hearing Institute, he helped change what’s possible in the small country of Lesotho. After graduating from our program In 2016, Khotso Kebise became the first ever registered Hearing Instrument Specialist in Lesotho.

Today he’s helping reshape access, awareness, and dignity by reaching children, rural communities, and influencing national policy, including the recognition of sign language in 2025.

This isn’t just healthcare.
It's connection. Inclusion. Voice.
Because hearing isn’t just medical—it’s human.

Sometimes hearing care happens in a clinic. Sometimes it happens from the back of a truck.

Anicet had nearly given up his small retail shop. His hearing loss made it harder and harder to serve his customers, which is why he was so determined to reach our aftercare team and care for his Starkey Hearing Foundation hearing aids.

With limited network coverage, he never received our call about the aftercare visit. But after hearing about it from another patient, he jumped on a motorcycle and set out to find us, arriving just as we were packing up.

So we served him right there… from the back of the truck!

A quick mold change and battery refill, and Anicet was back on his way.

That’s the beauty of the WFA method. Our professionals don’t just work in clinics. They bring hearing care wherever it’s needed.
