I recently heard a surgeon on a podcast say:
“I don’t operate on a joint based off of an MRI. I operate based on how you feel.”
That statement stuck with me.
Too often, patients are told they have arthritis, a meniscus tear, or “bone-on-bone” changes and immediately assume surgery is inevitable. But an MRI is only one piece of the puzzle.
Your pain matters.
Your function matters.
Your goals matter.
The best surgeons I know don’t chase procedures—they pursue outcomes. They understand that sometimes the best treatment isn’t surgery at all. It’s improving strength, losing weight, increasing activity, managing pain, or committing to a structured rehabilitation program.
And when surgery is the right choice, success doesn’t begin on the operating table.
It begins beforehand.
Prehabilitation helps patients build strength, improve mobility, and prepare physically and mentally for the road ahead. Then after surgery, rehabilitation becomes the bridge that transforms a successful procedure into a successful life.
As a physical therapist, I’ve seen patients avoid surgery and thrive through conservative care. I’ve also seen patients achieve incredible outcomes after joint replacement because they invested in rehab before and after their procedure.
A great surgeon knows how to operate.
An exceptional surgeon knows when not to.
Choose healthcare providers who are willing to have the difficult conversations, prioritize your long-term well-being, and put your goals above everything else.
Because at the end of the day…
The goal isn’t surgery. The goal is getting your life back.
If you’re dealing with joint pain, considering surgery, or simply wondering what your options are, I’d be honored to help guide you through the process.
Whether the answer is rehabilitation, lifestyle modification, or preparing for surgery, my goal is to help you make informed decisions and move with confidence.
