👉🏻Let’s set the record straight-

Before your child enters kindergarten, do we expect them to know all of their letters and sounds? 🚌

No. 🚫

💡But, if your child has been in a setting where this skill is being taught and you aren’t seeing retention, we may want to take a look.

💨In general, kids learn alphabetics fast. If we find a child makes inconsistent, slow growth then it’s time we provide more (🧠especially if there is a family history of reading challenges/or history of speech/language delay)

👀Notice how we aren’t focusing on memorizing letters in alphabetical order? No flash cards here. It’s important to help young kids “latch” on to more than memorizing letters without context.

🥳👏This young learner? She went from knowing 8️⃣ sounds in December, to2️⃣3️⃣ sounds just 3 months later thanks to Ms. Hannah‼️ Just two times/week for 30 minutes 😱

🚌Kindergarten (and earlier!) is often when early signs become clear…and identifying them early allows us to intervene before reading struggles compound.

Early identification isn’t labeling. It’s supporting. 👊🏻

Then you paid for someone’s time to administer testing, but received no clinical expertise 💁🏼‍♀️

Yes, it’s true.

Many children who struggle with reading aren’t behind because they don’t practice enough. They’re missing specific foundational skills that need explicit instruction in order to improve. ⬇️

When those gaps aren’t identified, kids often end up practicing the same mistakes over and over…this leads to frustration for both the child and parent. You don’t need to spin your wheels, we can help.

✨Early identification can change the entire trajectory for a student with dyslexia.✨

That’s why education and awareness among future clinicians matters.

Dr. Maggie Block recently had the opportunity to speak with undergraduate Speech-Language Pathology students at Rockhurst University about dyslexia, sharing insights on assessment, intervention, and the role SLPs play in literacy.

Conversations like these help move the field forward and strengthen support for individuals with dyslexia.
