On Saturday, we screened 375 young hearts and found 3 abnormalities. Thank you to Muirlands Middle Foundation, The Foundation of La Jolla High School, and Kiwanis Club of La Jolla for supporting the event. Sudden cardiac arrest kills 23,000 children every year, the first symptom is often death.

It is our mission and purpose to educate, and to provide free heart screenings to prevent the loss of more young lives. Thank you to the entire Muirlands and La Jolla community for helping us make this screening possible, and to our amazing volunteers who share our passion and dedication for saving lives.

Eric would have been 32 years old today. Our Foundation exists because 23,000 children and youth continue to die each year in the US from sudden cardiac arrest; 23,000 children who should still be with us. Regular heart screenings are still not a part of well child visits.

If you have children, nieces, nephews, neighbors, any youth in your life encourage them to have their hearts screened (12-24 years old). It is quick, painless, and it could save their life.

Thank you Grossmont High School for hosting our annual East County heart screening for teens! We screened 467 hearts, found 6 abnormalities and 3 kids at risk of sudden cardiac arrest. We provided those families with the resources and advice on next steps so they can take action to safeguard their child's life.

Special shout out to the students from Grossmont Union High School District for training all attendees and some parents on CPR and AED use - our community is safer with 500+ new people knowing CPR!

The Eric Paredes Save A Life Foundation was honored to share sudden cardiac arrest prevention strategies at Los Angeles Unified School District High School Nurses Professional Development Symposium. School nurses are on the front lines of student health and wellness and are a critical driver in combating a leading cause of death on school campuses. A new report links the death of a Texas teen to caffeine from an energy drink that over-stressed her heart. In 2023, Canada recalled this energy drink over caffeine content and labeling concerns. We MUST be more vigilant about limiting these unregulated beverages that are posing as mental boost or performance-enhancing supplements.

The family’s attorney said that Larissa Nicole Rodriguez had no pre-existing heart problems and that “the only thing she had in her system was caffeine.”
