Beachy air AND birth work? Does it get any better??!?!?

I am so grateful for a fabulous weekend at the Legacy Birth Academy hosted by Aya Wellness NC on the OBX. Huge gratitude to Mama Tina and the entire team for intentionally cultivating a space for us to learn, to connect and to grow. My heart is full!

So apparently I collect clinical programs now?!??
I’ve officially added a Pathway 3 Clinical Lactation training to the rotation. 🤱📚

Grateful to be mentoring with Angela Tatum Malloy in my hometown at Momma's Village - Fayetteville (added bonus - I get to see my parents). I just wrapped up my observation phase and am moving into active, hands-on clinicals. Huge shoutout to The BLACK Course for the didactic foundation.

All of my craziness, all of the things I do - none of this happens alone. I’m infinitely grateful for my family, friends, and mentors that support me, that cheer me on and keep propelling me forward.

The most favorite part of my job at MomsRising.org is sharing the stories of *real* families with lawmakers. It will never get old.

As the weekend began I was in full blown whiney mode. Work has been insane (good, but insane), the house chores have stacked up, and the kids continue to teen and tween (yes I think I’ve turned those into verbs).

All this to say - I’d been going really strong and steady with my school work, but the last few weeks I just haven’t. Every time I sat down to read, something else needed my attention or honestly, it was the end of the day and I just didn’t have the mental capacity to do any more.

In the midst of my whiney meltdown, I was reminded of the blessing that is the flexibility of the midwifery program I chose. I *needed* the ability to lean in and lean out with the ebbs and flows of work, family, and the rest of life. That is just the season I’m in.

I’ll admit, I had to take a deep breath and let it soak in, but I appreciate the gentle reminder.

Today I was able to get back into a groove and then set myself up for a busy week ahead with some study time carved in.

Today I had the gift of standing in the room surrounded by friends, colleagues, mentors, and co-conspirators telling my why - why I fight every single day to improve Black maternal health. I was so grateful to represent MomsRising.org before my long-time friend Governor Josh Stein as he signed the Black Maternal Health Week Proclamation. I’m grateful for the leadership of Senator Natalie Murdock, Senator Sydney Batch, and the entire NC Legislative Black Caucus in amplifying this issue and pushing for the real, systemic change North Carolina families deserve.

The reality is the U.S. is the most dangerous developed nation to give birth and Black mamas in North Carolina are twice as likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white mamas.

I’m committed to a future where every birth is safe and every family has access to supportive, high-quality healthcare, paid family and medical leave, and affordable childcare.
