Sorry to add another tick to your feed, but Alpha-gal is certainly having a moment. It's showing up in news segments, Facebook feeds, and dinner table conversations. And honestly? That matters. Awareness saves lives.
But here's what's getting lost in the coverage.
Almost every headline calls it a red meat allergy.
It is not a red meat allergy.
Alpha-gal (galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose) is a sugar molecule found in every cell of every mammal. When a lone star tick bite triggers an immune response to it, the body begins reacting to far more than a burger. We're talking dairy, gelatin, certain medications and vaccines, natural flavors, caramel coloring, supplements, and topical products. People find themselves suddenly allergic to the pets they've had and loved for years. The hidden sources alone can take years to map out, often without a provider who fully understands what they're looking for.
People lose medications they depend on. They react to products they've used for years without ever connecting the dots. They get dismissed because their symptoms don't follow a neat pattern and their numbers "look fine."
We know this picture.
At Raja Wellness, we have worked with several thousand patients navigating alpha-gal syndrome and other tick-borne conditions. Our clinic owner, JennyMarie Greenough, LAc is currently training other providers across Kentucky on how to properly recognize and manage it, because the gap between diagnosis and real clinical understanding is still enormous.
We understand how layered this is. How exhausting the detective work is. How isolating it feels when the world is finally talking about your condition but still getting it wrong.
You deserve care from people who have actually been in the weeds on this.
If you've been recently diagnosed, still chasing answers, or trying to understand why you're still reacting even when you're "doing everything right," we'd love to talk.
