Sensory Wellness

Sensory Wellness I’m Robyn Chu, author of Sensory Wellness. My work centers the body in a noisy world, offering science-grounded ways to reconnect with our senses.

Through sensory attunement, we cultivate calm, clarity, balance, and deeper connection in everyday life.

Are you a sensory seeker or sensory avoidant?

A sensory seeker craves more input. They turn the music up loud, love bold flavors, seek out movement, and feel most alive when the environment is full and stimulating.

A sensory avoider prefers less. They gravitate toward quiet spaces, may be bothered by certain textures or fabrics, and need more time to decompress after a full day.

Most of us are actually a mix of both. And here is what matters most about understanding this: when we become aware of our sensory preferences, we stop fighting our own nervous system and start working with it.

That is where regulation begins.

Regulation is not about being calm all the time. It is the ability to shift in and out of hard moments with fluidity. To have a gap between what happens and what you do next. To respond instead of react. When that gap exists, we access our knowledge, our values, and the version of ourselves we actually want to be.

Sensory awareness is one of the most powerful ways to build that capacity. 💛

I am so excited for my author event, hosted by Barnes & Noble! This is a special place for me for much of my life; browsing the aisles, getting lost in novels, and so much more! It has helped me through many life milestones. I hope you will join me Saturday (June 13th) at Barnes & Noble in the Folsom Palladio. It is truly one of the most remarkable places in the city!

There is a phrase I come back to again and again in my work, both as an occupational therapist and as an author on this topic. 💫

Children need to be regulated before they can learn. And adults need to be regulated before they can teach, or parent, or lead. 🫶

This is not a soft idea. It is neuroscience. ✨

In ✨Sensory Wellness: The Art and Science of Thriving✨, I explore how regulation is the foundation of everything. It is not about being calm all the time. A regulated person shifts in and out of calm with fluidity. What regulation gives us is the ability to think before we act. To respond instead of react. To access all the knowledge and skill we have worked so hard to build.

When a child is dysregulated, their nervous system is in survival mode. Learning cannot happen there. Connection cannot happen there. And when the adult in the room is dysregulated too, the nervous system of every child in that space feels it. We attune to each other, whether we mean to or not.

This is why sensory wellness is not just a personal practice. It is a relational one. When we tend to our own regulation, we change the environment for everyone around us.

If you are a parent, teacher, therapist, or anyone who shows up for others every day, this work is for you too. 💛

💛 Happy International Children’s Day 💛

Children remind us that regulation is not about perfection. It is about connection, safety, curiosity, and being met where we are.

Every day, children are navigating a world filled with sensory experiences, expectations, transitions, and feelings that can be difficult to put into words. So often, their bodies are communicating long before language arrives.

Today, I am celebrating the uniqueness, resilience, creativity, and wisdom that children bring into our lives.

May we continue listening more closely, responding more gently, and creating spaces where children feel seen, supported, and free to grow into who they already are.

The world is brighter because of them.

Robyn

Today we pause and we remember. 🤍

Memorial Day is a day to honor those who gave everything so that we could live fully. And living fully, with presence, with gratitude, with connection, is one of the most meaningful ways we can honor that gift.

I think about the nervous system on a day like this. How gratitude, just like grief, is felt in the body. In the deep breath we take when we step outside. In the warmth of the people we gather with. In the quiet moments when we allow ourselves to simply be here.

Today I hope you feel that presence. Hold the people you love a little closer, breathe in the day, and carry forward the spirit of those who made it possible. 🤍

To every Gold Star family and to all who served, thank you.

Robyn

What would your ideal day actually feel like?

One of my favorite invitations in Sensory Wellness: The Art and Science of Thriving is this one: close your eyes and imagine your ideal sensory day. Not just what you would do, but what you would hear when you wake up. What you would smell. What the air would feel like. What you would see when you look out the window.

Most of us have never paused long enough to ask those questions. And yet our senses are shaping every moment of our experience, whether we are aware of them or not.

When we begin to articulate what we actually want our sensory world to feel like, something shifts. We move from reacting to our environment to intentionally designing it. That is where agency begins.

The Ideal Sensory Day reflection sheet is one of my favorite pages from the Sensory Wellness Reflection Journal. It walks you through your morning, one sense at a time, and invites you to envision the life your nervous system is longing for.

You can download it free at robynchu.com/resources/ 💛
