Hypermobility is NOT just flexibility

It's a stability issue.

Your joints are supposed to be supported by ligaments and connective tissue, but when those structures are more lax, your body has to compensate somewhere else.

Your muscles take over
They work overtime
Causing them to become tight, fatigued, and overworked.

Which is why you might feel:
Tight AND loose at the same time
Constant muscle tension
Fatigue or weakness
OR get recurrent injuries

Your body isn't "broken"
It's trying to stabilize the best way that it can.

Understanding this is the first step to actually improving it.

Most people have heard phrases like these before:

“On a scale of 0–10, how bad is your pain?” or "My pain tolerance is so high, my 5/10 is your 10/10"

But here’s the problem: that scale only tells part of the story.

The standard pain scale measures intensity (how much it hurts in the moment).
But it doesn’t tell me how your pain is actually affecting your life.

That’s where a chronic pain (functional) scale comes in.

Instead of just asking “How bad is it?”
It asks:
• Can you focus?
• Can you work?
• Can you exercise?
• Are you avoiding things you used to do?

Because two people can both say “I’m at a 5,” but one is functioning pretty normally, and the other is struggling to get through the day.

Same number. Very different reality.

In my office, I care about more than just lowering your pain score. I also focus on helping improve your ability to live your life.

That means:
✔ Moving better
✔ Functioning better
✔ Getting back to the things you enjoy

Pain is important.
But function is what truly tells us if you’re getting better.

Recently, I was asked by WETM to answer questions about the effects of winter weather on joint and muscle pain. It was such a great opportunity to talk about something many of us experience this time of year!

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM)- In the winter, and between seasons many people report increased muscle and joint stiffness or pain. Changes in the temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity can contribute…

Not all headaches are the same.

Neck tension, stress, posture, and sleep can all contribute to headaches, but sometimes headaches can be an early sign of a different medical issue. Which is why it is important to get headaches evaluated.

Let's be real for a second. Everyone has had a doctor tell them at some point, "eat right and get more sleep". Or the dreaded questions "have you tried relaxing? Or yoga? Or losing weight?"

I try to lead by example, and practice what I preach. But it's hard, and I'm 100% there with you. I'm not perfect, I forget and put self care on the back burner from time to time. I get that life usually has other plans.

So instead I preach BALANCE.

Everyone has their own version of their own balance in life. Everyone heals at their own pace. So it's all about finding a provider that will work with you instead of feeling like you're being accused of not doing things right.

If you feel like your body can predict the weather, you're not imagining it.

Cold temperatures and changes in barometric pressure can affect muscle tension, joint stiffness, and nervous system sensitivity, especially for people with autoimmune conditions, past injuries, or chronic pain.

These flares don't mean new damage. They're often a response to environmental stress. Supporting your body with warmth, gentle movement, and nervous system regulation can help reduce how intense those symptoms feel.

Save this and share with someone you know to help them manage their weather flare ups ❄️
