I grew up in a spiritualist church with mediumship and healing. Visions, energy, phenomena. I thought that was the path.

So I chased bliss. I did all sorts of practices, all the time, trying to get back to that state. What I got instead were painful imbalances in my system and glamours I couldn’t see yet.

What I wish someone had told me: spiritual development moves in stages, and each stage has its own specific pitfalls.

A few things the map shows:

Someone integrating their personality and building values often feels at home in traditional religion.
Someone with a strong ego getting ready for the path may treat business as their religion: focus, drive, building in the world.
Someone starting to loosen identification with the ego is often drawn to Zen Buddhism.
A mystic can have constant visions and energy experiences and still have little real development. A religious person can stay spiritually young their whole life.

The practices that pull at you hardest point to the stage you’re in. Knowing the stage shows you the pitfall waiting there.

If you love to avoid the news from now until November, my friend, you are for sure not alone.

The coverage feeds the loudest part of the nation: the Gemini personality that thrives on debate and splits everything into two sides. Scrolling, arguing, or tuning out all keep you inside that same field.

But there gets to be a different way. You can hold the election in willful intention and serve the soul of the nation.

The US soul sits under Aquarius; inclusion, group consciousness, right human relations. That quality needs people holding it right now.

Some teachers will tell you the path is about raising your vibration, finding peace, and resting in love. Those things matter. Then the energy has to go somewhere.

Spiritual energy moves through you so it can reach others. Service is how the heart grows and how the mind earns its wisdom. When practice stays private (another retreat, another insight, another beautiful experience), the energy feeds the personality, and the seeker grows more comfortable and more stuck at the same time.

The soul serves by nature. A path that skips service drifts away from the soul, however spiritual it feels along the way.

Love on a mountaintop is a start. Love with willful wisdom, applied to the suffering in front of you, is the path.

The reality is, the stages of human consciousness have been mapped for a long time, and it’s totally silly this isn’t talked about everywhere.

Here is the arc:

Cancer stage. We absorb the ideas of the masses and repeat what the crowd feels. An estimated 60 to 70% of humanity lives here.

Leo stage. We become individuals. We think for ourselves, and we want outcomes that protect our own comfort.

Aquarian stage. Awareness widens to include the whole. Our gifts go toward service.

You should know this: spiritual development changes what you receive. The same mind that once picked up the mood of the crowd becomes a receptor for energy from the soul, and from the soul of the nation. Nations have souls. Ours is trying to come through right now, and it needs people who can register it.

And if you only take one non-negotiable from this into the next few weeks, it should be this: carry that receptivity into the midterms. Vote from what serves the whole.

If your spiritual awakening has you sitting in a counselor’s office, you might be thinking more therapy will settle it. But actually, therapy and spiritual development work on two different stages of the path.

Instagram would love for you to believe that calming your emotions and finding your purpose again is the whole awakening.

Instead, here’s what you need to know:

Personality development builds the instrument. Good therapy helps your body, emotions and mind work together so you can hold steady, keep your relationships and finish what you start. In the Trans-Himalayan teachings, this integrated personality is the first stage for every human.
Spiritual development hands that instrument over to the soul. The questions change. “What do I want?” becomes “What is needed?” Comfort gives way to steadiness under pressure. Happiness gives way to usefulness.
The two crises look alike and need different tools. A personality crisis eases when you soothe the emotions and strengthen the mind. A soul crisis arrives when the soul asks the mind and emotions to serve something higher. Soothing that back to normal can close the door on the next stage in this life.

Keep your therapist. Study the path alongside it, and learn the specific crisis your soul ray moves through.

If you’ve ever wondered what “moving energy from the sacral to the throat” means, come on in my friend and take a seat.

Your sacral center carries physical creative energy: s*x, appetite, making things with the body. Your throat center carries creative intelligence: ideas, speech, writing, building with the mind.

The transference happens when that energy starts to rise. Less of your life force goes to appetite. More goes to creating with your mind. It’s one marker that an initiation is beginning in you.

Many people stop at the creativity. The soul has a further use for it: service. Words that help someone see. Work that meets a real need.

This lift takes years. Feeling the strain is normal. Living in it with no map is the hard part.

Signs you’re in it:

Two natures pull at once. Clear and devoted in meditation, then reaching for whatever feels good by evening.
Bursts of vision, then nothing. A big idea at 2am, three weeks of fire, then the project stalls.
Appetite in spiritual clothes. Twin flame and sacred union fantasy running right alongside real aspiration.
Ideas with nowhere to go. Notebooks full of courses and offerings you never start.
Caring beyond your circle. A cause or community pulls at you before you know your part.
Hungry for more experiences. More retreats, more teachings, and a quiet suspicion that more won’t settle it.

What helps: a clean physical rhythm, and one real creative project, finished and offered to the people who need it.

When I talked about people interpreting truth in different ways, here is how we reconcile that as a society: we build the antahkarana, the bridge to the higher planes. First we receive impressions from the soul. Then, as real markers of spiritual development appear, we gain the capacity to participate. Those markers are true values and a way of living that reaches past our own comfort and our own family.

Catching spiritual energies, bliss, love, and mystical goodness is a beginning. A spiritually oriented person goes on to work at reducing pain and suffering in the world, and uses their life to shine that light toward others. Many many many people use spiritual practices to escape pain.. rather than to truly build the capacity to use spiritual power to reduce suffering in the world.

As we build out this spiritual anatomy, the argument of “it’s this way” versus “it’s that way” loosens its grip. We see more clearly and understand more fully.

I say this with certainty. This bridge exists, and anyone willing to do the work can build it. It sits above the astral plane, where people contact spirits, on a different level entirely.
