We are seeing more cases of poison ivy this month due to increased exposure to this plant while hiking or gardening. Things to know:
-The blistering itchy rash occurs in those who are allergic to the resin oil (urushiol) when skin comes in contact with any part of the plant.
- The rash is not contagious but it will spread to any areas on the body that come in contact with the resin.
-Pets can have the resin on their fur from walking in wooded areas or near shrubs.
-Best to protect skin from exposure with socks, long sleeves, pants and gloves especially when hiking in the woods or weeding the garden.
- Immediately wash off resin off of skin with dish detergent or soap when exposed.
- Clean all shoes, hats, clothing, belts, gardening tools and pets with gloved hands to avoid re-exposure to the resin that can linger on surfaces .
-Severe cases can be treated with oral and topical steroids and antihistamines.
