Facts about plastic:
- There are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic in our ocean. This number is increasing as plastic pollution gets worse all the time.
- Around 73% of beach litter is plastic, including grocery bags, food wrappers, bottle caps, cigarette butts, and others.
- The world production of plastic was around 2.1 million tons in 1950. In 2015 this number was 406 million tons.
- By 2050, it’s predicted that every seabird around the world will be eating plastic, as it will become common everywhere.
- 2015 data shows we generated around 6.3 billion tons of plastic. 9% was recycled, and 12% was incinerated. 79% ended up in landfills and the oceans.
- Around a billion plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute all over the world.
- A plastic bottle takes 450 years to degrade.
- 40% of plastic waste comes from one-time-use packaging.
NYC signed ban on single use plastic bags. NJ too, but I still see them offered in my local stores.
