Ryan's Neuroblastoma Journey Ryan was diagnosed on July 13, 2021 with stage 4 high risk neuroblastoma.

He has undergone chemo, resection surgery, radiation, two bone marrow transplants, had disease progress and was declared cancer free during immunotherapy in October 2022.

Ryan is back in Pittsburgh. He was sick Friday night. I took him to Hamot and they did a CT scan and found a partial bowel blockage and inflammation. We were at Hamot 11ish hours and then taken to Pittsburgh to rule out surgery and have him evaluated. He is feeling much better and doesn’t need surgery. He just needs to give his bowel a rest. They want to try and figure out what caused the inflammation. As of right now they have told me they do not think it’s a reoccurrence and didn’t see any masses on the scan. We were moved to the 9th floor (where it all started in 2021). I’m not sure how long we’ll be here. Maybe a couple nights.

Today is Ryan’s 5 year diagnosis anniversary. We are living in the days I could only dream about 5 years ago. Looking forward to these days is how I got through the hell that is childhood cancer.

Ryan is doing well and going into 4th grade. When we talk about his time in the hospital, believe it or not, he has more good than bad memories. The play place, the nurses, child life, music, art, his social worker, Dee, RMH, the time he road on a motorcycle, and many more. I’m so thankful he has those memories and that we have the opportunity to make new ones. It’s absolutely something I will never take for granted.

Ryan’s still cancer free! No more scans and no more vaccines! He received a certificate and a gift card for completing the vaccines. Going forward he will see the long term care team once a year.

Tomorrow is a big day. Ryan gets his last vaccine and his last scans! We’ve been filling the days with appointments and fun activities. We are all wore out and sore from all the walking.
