Seriously, don't be embarrassed. This happens ALL the time. We've been conditioned to think that there is a giant gush of a gallon of fluid that falls on the floor as soon as your water breaks and you are supposed to then run to the hospital and immediately push your baby out. That just isn't how things work in the real world most of the time, thank goodness because holy moly that seems incredibly dramatic. Keep calm, keep learning, & keep in communication with your provider. I promise you won't be pregnant forever.

Birthing a baby, healing your body, and learning to parent a newborn is a monumental shift. Yet, so many new parents look at their struggles and think, "I must be doing something wrong." You aren't.

Postpartum exhaustion is real. Lactation hurdles are real. The mental load is real. This chapter isn't demanding because you lack skill, patience, or instinct. It is demanding because you are doing one of the most intense, transformative things a human can do. If you are in the thick of it right now, give yourself some grace. You are doing an incredible job at something that is just inherently, deeply difficult. You do not have to carry the weight alone. Having a doula means having someone in your corner to normalize the chaos, support your choices, and remind you of your strength when you forget it.

Forgive yourself for not knowing how hard it can be to be surrounded by people who say they want to help but don't know how or who wait for instructions or have very different ideas of what postpartum should look like. Coordinating the village takes work, and getting ready for postpartum isn't something that everyone truly thinks about the first time. Expecting again brings up all kinds of feelings for most people, and honestly, a whole lot more preparation for postpartum usually. Forgive yourself for not knowing, and schedule the help you need to rest, recover, and spend more time bonding with your baby.

The waves of labor can feel overwhelming. Sometimes you want to fight them, and that can make them feel more challenging. Sometimes you want to float on top, but then a bigger one can come along and push you down. Learning to surf along the top with techniques for relaxation, visualization, breathing, and movement can make a world of difference. This is why all our birth doula clients have access to a full Lamaze Childbirth Education Course, and in July, we're bringing back our popular Coping with Labor Naturally class. Dates coming soon!
