How did you choose your baby's name?
My kids both have first names that we loved and family names for their middle names. I love hearing the creative ways that people come up with baby names! One of my favorite trends that I have seen with clients is to have a short list of names that both partners love and then they make the final decision after they see their baby's face. Naming a kid felt like the biggest responsibility for me as an expecting parent! I also really love the trend of people keeping the name secret until after baby is born, especially as it keeps all the outside opinions about the name away too.

When this potential client's partner used the phrase "just sitting at the birth" it really rubbed me the wrong way, and I honestly don't know where he got that idea, but I do know that is a common critique I hear about birth doulas especially from people who have never seen us in action. To be fair, might sometimes look like we are just sitting there, and most of what we do as birth doulas happens in very private spaces that people don't see. We take our clients' privacy extremely seriously as well, so we don't often post pictures from births and never without permission. Very rarely am I ever just sitting there at a birth staring into space thinking about nothing, and anyone who has worked with me professionally can tell you that most of the time I have my "thinking face" on and am working my tail off trying to make sure my clients have the best experience possible under all the circumstances in which they find themselves. I'm a firm believer that birth is NOT a spectator sport, and any doula worth their fee is working hard even if only on the inside until the next needed physical comfort technique or suggestion. That list is in no way exhaustive, and I have continued to think about that last birth ever since it happened. If you want a birth doula who just sits there, then I do not suggest hiring one from our team.

One of my favorite parts of being a birth doula is talking through all of the options with my clients. I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that I as the doula am coming in to tell people what they should do, and that could not be further from the truth. I love helping my clients navigate to find the evidence-based information about their choices so they can figure out what is best for their situation specifically. This is the kind of individualized care that all our birth doula clients can expect.. After our prenatal meetings, I am always sending further information for my client about specific topics that they have questions about as well. For example, this morning I sent out information specifically about gestational diabetes, induction planning, vitamin k, nutrition for low iron in pregnancy, and link specifically for learning about meditation and hypnobirthing techniques for labor and delivery.

I love helping clients feel more confident about their decisions!

Consent is consent is consent and you absolutely do NOT give up your right to consent just because:
-you're pregnant
-they're your doctor
-you're in labor
-you signed a "consent" document
-you have an epidural
-you said yes last time
-you asked for help with breastfeeding

Phrases to use when people violate your consent and touch you without your permission:
1. "Please do not touch me without my consent."
2. "Please respect my boundaries, and ask before touching me."
3. “Please pause. I’m not comfortable being touched without an explanation first.”
4. “I’d like to give consent before any examination or procedure.”
5. "Did you know that touching someone without their consent can be considered assault?"

Speak up, even if your voice is shaking. You do NOT have to just let someone touch you. If you do not have the ability to refuse or are given only part of the information about benefits and risks, that is considered coercive consent, and is unethical.
Signing a document does NOT equal implied consent for every single thing that could possibly happen to you.

Compassionate trauma-informed care is so much more than a list of benefits. Helping parents navigate issues within the real world requires so much more than scripted talking points, and people deserve providers who know how to ask questions about feeding issues and goals without judgement and with a list of resources no matter the choices that they have made--including all safe ways to feed babies. People need answers that fit their needs, and this was a great example of how NOT to help.

Also of note: I get it, physicians are tired and have a lot to do, but even in a short visit, it is very possible to DO BETTER!

Access to doula care shouldn't be limited by your ability to pay, and doulas deserve to be paid for their work. Please feel free to pass this message on to your elected officials, especially those who think it more appropriate to spend tax payer money on building a helipad on their private property than to find doula services.
